Check in: Did you feed your mailbox (for the food pantry) today? |
|
The letter carriers are picking up non-perishable foods TODAY!
Marta and I kicked in. The Scouts were here 3 weeks ago too.

4. Yep! I noticed many yellow bags on top of mailboxes in the neighborhood too. |
|
Our school also had a canned food drive this week, so I only put out four items in the bag. My pantry has only so much food.

5. No, I instead fed the food pantry directly with money. |
|
I hope we see a record food gifting this year!
But I also remind people that food banks can usually buy 8-12 times as much with your dollar as you can - giving money is MUCH better than giving food. The $1 you spent on a can of peas could have bought 8-12 cans of peas at the food pantry.

9. That's an important reminder |
|
This annual event hopefully spurs people to become more involved with the local food banks and hunger in general. There are a lot of elderly people in my building on fixed incomes so seeing them come out and place a few items in the bags that they probably could barely afford (and that probably came from their own shelves), always reminds me of the inherent generosity of people.
Oh, and yes, my 2 bags went out by the mailboxes last night.

17. I had no idea that the multiplier was that high! |
|
Shopping for suitable foodstuffs is difficult for me at present. So what I did was pass a check on to my Postal Lady, and made out to her union ---NALC: http://www.nalc.org/commun/foodrive/index.htmlpnorman

28. That's true. And then they can buy exactly what's needed, but |
|
I still think anything that gets people thinking about the issue and doing something at all is a good thing, you know?

19. It is always right around Mother's Day |
|
That is how I remember it. The Postal Carriers Union site says that they always have it the second Saturday of May.
So when you start hearing all the Mothers Day ads blaring out at you, think food for the hungry and of the mail carriers who help deliver it for you.

She just left and I just missed her.
Food bank won't be open until Monday.
I don't understand why they included a reminder and bag in the mail yesterday if they weren't going to participate today.

31. I figured they were delivering mail first and then coming back later for pick-up, since they've done |
|
Edited on Sat May-10-08 08:46 PM by tblue37
it that way in the past, though it was later than usual for pick-up. I hoped it was just that they had gotten so much extra food that it was taking time to cllect it all.
I went to my tutoring appointments at 5:50 p.m., and when I came back after 8:00, the bags were still on my porch, but it had rained, and they were wet.
When I tried to pick them up, they broke and the food scattered and rolled (much of it was in cans). I have ruptured discs in my lower back and I walk with a cane. It was slow and painful for me to gather up all the spilled food, especially since some of it rolled off the porch so I had to go up and down the steps to get it.
I am truly frustrated and even a bit pissed off. I think I will write a LTTE and complain about feeling like a chump for trying to participate in this food drive and then being left literally holding the bag--at least until they disintegrated and spilled food everywhere.
I have always liked donating, but I think I won't participate in this food drive again.

23. Yes - I almost forgot |
|
A neighbor just brought me a container of strawberries and it reminded me of today's collection. Luckily, the carrier is slow with all the donations they'll be picking up and hasn't been here yet.
I left a boxed red velvet cake mix. They'll get a lot of staples, so I thought to leave a treat.

Thanks DU'ers for reminding me! :hi:
I was out sweeping the sidewalk after cutting the grass this afternoon and the mail carrier turned the corner onto my street and then honked. My daughter asked, "what was that for"? I said I think that was a "thank you" for the food donation.
