Former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is at the top of the list of John McCain’s possible running mates, according to a top McCain fundraiser with ties to his inner circle.

Economic conservatives are likely to oppose the choice of Huckabee as McCain’s vice presidential candidate, given the populist tone of his campaign and his tax record as governor of Arkansas.

But in his “Capital Commerce” column for U.S. News & World Report, James Pethokoukis points to the fundraiser’s disclosure and cites several factors that could make Huckabee a strong asset for McCain.

For one thing, the former Baptist minister is a great campaigner who could garner support in the South among social conservatives and at the same time appeal to working-class voters in the crucial states .....

1. I wonder if ol' Huck is still at the top of that list after the
assassination joke.

Quite a damn few of us likely didn't think it was all that funny.

21. No, the article above was written BEFORE the joke.
Check the date.

If anything, the joke will make McCain rethink.

8. I hope so. He'd scare off moderates and women like nobody's business.
He's a religious nutjob, and he's crooked, and the religious right doesn't like him because he's not hostile to the poor (really, if you don't believe me go search on Rapture Ready or someplace like that.) He can't bring in any large demo of voters McCain doesn't have already.

10. Sadly, McCain's VP choice is Joe Lieberman, Senator from Connecticut
But, I still think Cheney will be the GOP candidate for President.

12. The GOP had better get rid of mcCain and start over with someone
who does not have dementia and going senile. McCain talks like a crazy person who is in la la land. But that is what it takes to get elected, I guess. But with things the way they are now, I just can't believe the GOP will allow their ticket to be headed by John McCain no matter who he picks for VP. Don't they have any intelligent, moderate, charming Republicans living today? I guess not. This nation is up shit's creek because I don't think Obama is up for what will be facing him should he win the Presidency.

13. You are sooooo wrongooo! Obama's IS the best and the brightest. Harvard Law summa cum laude
and top of his class vs. John McCain at the bottom of his under-graduate class at a second-rate school, not to mention the failing neurology.

If the best and the brightest is not good enough for you, should we be looking for extra-terrestrial intelligence or what!

17. I knew it...
As soon as John McCain became the top GOPer, I was pretty sure that he'd pick fundamentalist Mike Huckabee to appease the Bible Belt base of the GOP.

18. That's the ticket. McCain and minister Huckabee -
a match made in hell. Great for the end times.

Another combo I'd like to see is McCain welded to Wormtongue Lieberman.

20. Surely, you forgot the sarcasm thingie! == Dinkie and the Drain!!
Dinky: "Gee Drain, what do you want to do today?"
The Drain: "The same thing we do every day, Dinky - try to take over the USA."

Of course, the analogy is flawed, because they are NOT genetically enhanced!!

Huckabee just flushed himself down the drain, and
the Good Lord will enhance that action in good time!

23. Huck is the best debater of the other Repub candidates
if you handicap Ron Paul for his need to make sense some time (e.g. "It's time to bring our troops home.") Huck is able to make decent arguments out of some of the stupid Republican platforms, like convincing the conservative base that pre-emptive war strategy is a good party platform. Alan Keyes is probably a better debater, but he scares the bejesus out of some conservatives. Plus it's weird to actually see a politician with religious platforms amongst politicians faking their religious sincerity to their evangelical base.
