Digby: Member Of McCain's *Dream* Base Not Voting For Him Because He's Too Old...

Some of you may remember me writing about my conservative Dad --- retired military, very right wing, very political. He's the type of guy who thinks General Curtis Lemay had the right idea about bombing Hanoi back into the stone age.

He and I were just talking about the presidential race and he astonished me by saying that he won't vote for McCain because he's just too old. This, from a man who is nearly 15 years older than him! In his case, this translates into just not voting rather than a vote for Obama or Clinton (completely out of the question, of course) but for those elderly who aren't so rigid in their politics, this really could be a big deal. McCain should be my Dad's dream candidate --- naval war hero POW, military obsessive, "go-to-hell" macho attitude. That his age overrules all of that good stuff says something.

1. When Reagan ran in '80, the 71-year-old guy I worked for said he wouldn't vote for Reagan. . .

because he knew how much time had robbed from him over the years, and he just didn't think someone Reagan's age would be a competent President. He liked Reagan's politics (for the most part), and thought him a decent enough fellow (though why was beyond me), he just didn't think someone that old was the best choice for such a demanding job.

Today, at 99, he's even more convinced that McCain would be a tragic mistake.

2. I got my hair cut yesterday

My hairdresser is left wing and we almost always talk politics when I am there. She was telling my that one of her clients was in the other day, and this woman's husband is as right wing as they get. Ex military, voted for Boosh twice, and did some kind of work where he had met a lot of the Senators. He said that he refuses to vote for McCain, said he will vote for Obama. If somebody like that is voting democratic this year, the signs are good.
