When democrats win the White House and sweep the U.S. Congress, just how
...much work will have to be done and how quickly will that political clean-up need to be done to reverse the damage brought onto the country over eight years of Bush-ism?

Here is something I found on the efforts of cleaning out the Nazi nests in Germany after allied victory in Europe:

<snip>
As for de-Nazification, it sounded good, and indeed was morally and politically necessary. But distinguishing between real and nominal Nazis often proved extremely difficult. Small officials who’d joined the party out of necessity were thrown out of office, while big businessmen who’d profited under Hitler were left alone. The policy generated growing hostility to the occupiers, and its implementation was soon handed over to the Germans themselves. This caused its own bitterness as the Germans were often seen as being too lenient.

Even so, despite this willingness to rethink and adjust, occupation policy floundered. Two years after Allied victory, Germany was in desperate straits, facing an economic crisis that threatened to nip democracy in the bud. Only the Marshall Plan, with its massive program of financial aid, saved the country from disaster. Self-government did not come until 1949, and Allied troops remained in West Germany as occupiers until 1955, a full decade after the defeat of the Third Reich.

Unrepentant Nazis stayed active on the extreme fringes of West German politics for years, and a few ex-Nazis held high positions even in mainstream politics until the 1960s. The Christian Democratic politician Kurt Georg Kiesinger, who had joined the Nazi Party in 1933, was chancellor of the Federal Republic from 1966 to 1969.

Rebuilding a nation is possible. But even in the best of circumstances, it takes effort, time, patience and pragmatism. As 1945 confirms, liberation from a dictator in itself offers no easy path to peace or democracy. Battlefield victory is the easy bit. Building peace is a constant struggle — and it’s a matter of years, not weeks.

Just what will the democratic Marshall Plan be to restore confidence and a functioning and lasting economy here at home? We are facing some serious hard times with no tangible plan and a near fascistic military ready to choke the life out of our American democracy. If the republicans manage to retain power by a John McCain win or a choke-hold on congress then I'm afraid the wars will continue and possibly expand further draining U.S. resources and treasure ultimately bring about an economic and political cataclysm. Any thoughts?

1. Gore Vidal said it would take 100 years for us to fully recover, for what it's worth.

4. He has pledged to review every executive order
for constitutionality and worthiness. There are an enormous number of them, some innocuous, some dire. It will take some time, but the implication is that the process can start fairly soon.

and the tax policies.

Retuning the Supreme Court to an even split will probably take 12 to 15 years. Short of impeachment, and that won't happen, we are stuck with Bush's judges for 20 or more years.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance. Because while we are trying to return the government to one approaching liberty, we have to guard against the inevitable corruption that will develop within our own ranks.

Freedom is dangerous. No one every said Freedom was easy.

11. Start with everyone who signed a loyalty oath
to the chimp and fire them on the spot. Just for starters.

13. Hmm you are aware that MANY states have Loyalty Oaths?
for example I had to sign one when I became a TA in a California State University over twenty years ago

Should I be barred from government service?

12. I perasonally find purging governments distasteful and the first ...
tactic of the tyrant.

Withng the governemnt bureaucracy, signing a loyalty oath is likly not grounds for termination. Fring them without cause is wrong.

If we act like them, we are them.
