sorry to hear about about your grandmother and uncle - sorry. The reason they differ is that they cannot necessarily even be partially removed without causing other damage - something which doesn't occur elsehwere in the body. Speech, logic and balance can be adversly affected not only by the tumour but also by the treatment/cure ? Hopefully he'll be lucky.

chemo and radiation can be very effective. Though I had a different type of cancer, I had chemo before surgery for similar reasons and it eliminated 100% of the tumor. Still here 9 years later.

If you had said "I hope he doesn't suffer long and have a great deal of pain and illness", that's very different.

I often thought about his father. How horrible it must have been for such a powerful man to be unable to speak and confined to a wheel chair -- especially with his full mental faculties intact.
EDIT: A DUer posted that his/her father had this particular type of cancer, and I believe he lived for 16 weeks. And a professor of neurology/neurosurgery on CNN said 3-4 months, usually.

37. Maybe he won't die at all. A friend had a seizure, went to the hospital |
|
had a bunch of tests and MRI's they said there was a tumor, did a biopsy, found it was malignant. He went back for some more tests and voila...the tumor had disappeared. More tests, and no further evidence of a tumor. This may be an out of the ordinary story, but being diagnosed with a brain tumor isn't necessarily a death sentence.
Good luck Sen. Kennedy.

38. I think you meant well -- but |
|
I can tell you this, when we get near the end of our lives buying a few more days can mean a lot to a person. I have a person in my life, a very close person, that has to take morphine every day just to control pain enough to not scream all day. She struggles to eat or drink anything, has countless indignities and yes, sometimes talks about quitting. But she's not quite there yet. The grandbaby's birthday is coming and she hopes to last long enough that that child remember her once grown. A year, a month, a week, or even a few days might yeild that one opportunity to make just one more difference in one more person's life.
there's something to be said for "quick and painless" Alive one minute and gone the next. No suffering. But never underestimate the suffering people will gracefully endure in the hope there will be a cure, or even just a little more time with the precious people they love.

Respect the man's privacy and don't treat his diagnosis as an automatic death sentence. There is plenty of reason to hope for successful treatment, there are many new options available.
He will be getting very good care, he's a strong and healthy person for his age and he has a great support system, all factors that increase chances for survival.
