$2.99 gas. GUARANTEED! The teevee just said so!
I can... hardly... contain my... um... excitement? :eyes:

Yeah, so anyway, I'm sitting here with the TV on, and during a commercial break one of the dealerships here in town comes on with an ad promising guaranteed $2.99 gas for a certain period of time if you come buy one of their cars. And they had all these puppets almost like on Sesame Street, and people all google-eyed going "What are you going to do with YOUR savings? Why, I'm going to drive up to the MOUNTAINS this weekend!"

Someone just fucking shoot me now and put me out of my misery.

Do they really think people have forgotten that just two years ago $2.99 was our worst nightmare?

The organized crime corporate criminals are conditioning YOU and ME to believe that the HIGH and HIGHER prices of EVERYTHING are OK. The RW corporate media will keep repeating it UNTIL WE believe it.

10. We have the same commercial in FL
They're desperate to move their cars.

My favorite commercial by far of late has to be the Burger King "Indiana Jones" scratch card one. You could win a new Hummer! Yeah...no thanks.

34. I think a Hummer is bigger than my apartment.
Guess I could always move into it, though I don't know how I'd afford the parking - or the gas if I had to move it more than twice a week.

11. No kidding, and how are the dealerships able to do this?
Where are they getting the money?

Are they getting subsidies? Are we actually paying for this in the long run?

FSM, I hate oil whores.

they're apparently betting that gas won't crack $10 within 3 years- and they may be very wrong about that.

36. it's frightening because many, many people
will continue to make between 6-10 dollars per hour. it's frightening because the U.S. is so large.

we haven't had to use horses and buggies as primary modes of transport in my lifetime. there would be an initial shock, but i suppose a person could get used to it.

33. Car companies give rebates all of the time.
It is always just built into the price of the car. Now instead of getting $3000 cash back when you buy a new car or $3000 for anything you can push, pull, or drag onto the lot you will get a card that lets you buy 12,000 miles worth of gas a year for 3 years.

I'm sure they estimate that using their best mileage estimates so it is the fewest gallons... it really isn't that big of a deal.

13. This just came up in conversation w/ my daughter and i
last week as i was returning her from end of semester 3 yr. college. She brought up that she'd heard these commercials advertising $2.99 gas if buying a vehicle. Her question to me, rather innocently: Are carmakers and gas co's tied together??

i looked at her askance w/ raised eyebrows...waiting...waiting... and she put her head in her hands and said... 'oh i knew it anyway, just couldn't believe it would be so obviously blatant!'

this from the young woman who doesn't drive, takes public trans and walks everywhere, and only depends on me and her mother and sis and friends to make the driven hauls between. In her favor, she does keep busy w/ her schoolwork - Dean's List this whole year in Early Childhood Ed. .. but it was nice seeing the film lift from her eyes and we laughed at it. If just for the moment, it was funny. As the truth sunk in...

life is so much simpler in college, then the real test begins.

Edited on Wed May-21-08 09:22 AM by tblue37
People are busy trying to survive--or even just entertaining themselves. They aren't thinking, "$2.99 was our worst nightmare two years ago." They are thinking, "Wow, that's almost $2 less than I am paying right now--and if gas prices go up again, as they inevitably will, I can lock in even greater savings!"
