Senate GOP Leader McConnell Trailing Democratic Opponent
The Senate Republicans are expected to have a rough time of it this year, but even this is big news: A new Rasmussen poll puts Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) behind his Democratic challenger, businessman Bruce Lunsford:

Lunsford (D) 49%
McConnell (R) 44%
Sample size: 500 likely voters.
Margin of error: ±4.5%

Party leaders are often considered safe bets for re-election, but McConnell's ties to President Bush obviously haven't helped his own prospects even in this red state. And with the DSCC out-raising their GOP counterparts, expect the Dems to make a play for this seat and others all over the map.

4. Senate Forecast Update: Republican Apocalypse
Somehow, the Senate Forecast has gotten even better for Democrats. We have gotten closer in Minnesota and Oregon, pulled ahead in Mississippi, and with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell falling behind in a new poll, it is a full-blown Republican apocalypse.

Right now, Democrats lead in five Republican-held seats, and are within 5% or less in another six seats. That presents Democrats with eleven targets that, any other election year, would be considered top-tier challenges. And this is in an environment where the DSCC has a cash on hand advantage of more than $20 million. Sixty Democrats in the Senate, and a filibuster-proof trifecta, is now entirely realistic.

And why is there a Republican Apocalypse? The answer is really, really simple:

The underlying reason that so many Republican seats are at risk is that fewer and fewer Americans consider themselves to be Republicans

5. Sweet. McConnell is openly anti-democracy.
Perhaps his constituents have started listening to what he actually says. Buh-bye Mitchy!
