Prince William Cnty, VA: Much better after kicking out the brown skinners |
|
About a year ago, Prince William County, VA, a farther out DC suburb, decided to purge all 'illegals' from its county of 300,000 good, white christian souls.
Today the county is crowing about 'success'. There is evidence the purge worked.
Businesses with signs in Spanish are boarded up.
There is an epidemic of uncut lawns and unkempt houses in the county.
Some schools are underutilized.
Yeah, there's evidence that the brown skinners left. All of them. Probably not just "illegals". The county became so INSTITUTIONALLY unwelcoming that, were I a resident, I might have left, too.
Some of us make the case that illegals are hurting us.
Others, like me, celebrate diversity and would much rather be welcoming and accepting.
Yeah ..... I know this is a controversial subject.
I still think my feelings are the better side of the issue. If we want to 'solve' the immigration problem, do it INSTITUTIONALLY, not on the backs of poor people who are trying to improve their lots in life.

16. I sort of half-jokingly blame HOAs here in AZ for undocumented immigration |
|
The rules about how your lawn and shrubbery has to look are so strict that people can't have their kids do yardwork like they used to.

2. I live next to PW County in Fairfax County |
|
1. Prince William County is going to lose millions in Federal dollars for the school system because they scared Latinos into not filling out the State surveys.
2. They are losing tax dollars from legal Spanish owned businesses that are closing. Drive down Route 1 sometime. Many of the stores are boarded up.
3. Their prisons are so full of people they picked up in immigration sweeps that they have to pay to send their prisoners to out-of-state prisons. Meanwhile, INS has no plans to pick up and deport the people picked up in their raids.
4. Houses are being abandoned.
5. Even the legal Spanish-descendant residents and citizens are moving out. The whole area is unfriendly.
Prince William County is the perfect example of misguided GOP politics and polices.

3. When the classifieds are half a page, there is a job problem |
|
Edited on Wed May-28-08 12:48 PM by cbc5g
I wish they were legalized, but as it is they work for far less and do take the jobs that high schoolers and college kids would take.
When you are financially secure, it's easy to say there isn't a job problem.

6. There is a job problem but deportation is the wrong solution. |
|
That just takes money OUT of the economy. When retailers have to shut down because their customers are in detention camps or have been deported, don't we lose jobs?

It's a difficult issue. I think a lot of people around here are just pissed at not being able to get a job. I got back from college 11 days ago and have turned in a dozen applications -- no call backs.

13. you don't think it might have something to do with outsourcing? |
|
our entire economic policy? Face it, if the steelworkers don't have jobs, the auto workers aren't gonna have jobs, the appliance manufacturers aren't gonna have jobs, the retail persons aren't gonna have jobs, the ticket takers at the theaters aren't gonna have jobs, the lawn people aren't gonna have jobs, because the system just works against all of them, except the top dogs. They get a better return on their investments while the rest of us starve.

12. Of course when you kick out all the illegals... |
|
all of the small businesses they patronize go out of business, and the price of food goes up they make and harvest goes up.
But of course all this race baiting bullshit was never really about helping low income American citizens.

4. My parents live in Prince William and it's a mess. People have been |
|
scooped up in the middle of the night and deported or have fled, fearing ICE raids. They are appalled at what is going on. My understanding is that it is pretty heartless.
Some of the other nearby counties may well be starting up similar programs, because all those families are going somewhere, and they aren't traveling that far. It's a very sad situation.

I don't think it's just an immigration problem for the fact that only 9.74% of the population were Hispanic or Latino according to the 2000 census. It's gotta be more than that.

15. I blame the corporations who are engaging in global cheap labor arbitrage |
|
Driving down wages, stripping worker protections, and suppressing unions worldwide. In an ideal world, the US would have an open immigration policy, allowing entry to anyone who wanted to be here, because the people coming here would WANT to come to the US and not be coming here because they were economic refugees.
