Neb. governor declares emergency (Thur night tornadoes)
AURORA, Neb., May 30 (UPI) -- Tornadoes tore through two Nebraska towns Thursday night, producing damage that prompted Gov. Dave Heineman to declare a state of emergency.

Heineman also put the Nebraska National Guard on alert in case troops were need to help, KOLN-KGIN in Lincoln-Grand Island reported.

The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said there were initial reports of several dozen homes damaged in Aurora and Kearney. The governor plans to tour the damage in those areas Friday, the stations reported.

Meanwhile, in Iowa, a tornado was reported to have touched down a mile east of Turin and six miles east of Onawa, a Monona County sherrif's deputy told The Des Moines Register. There were no reports of damage, however.

The National Weather Service said tornado sirens also sounded in the Missouri Valley in Harrison County, about 20 miles north of Council Bluffs.

Hugo's young tornado victim takes a big step toward recovery. Hugo preschooler Annika Prindle, who loves dancing and wants to be a ballerina, inched forward in an expected long recovery Thursday when she started breathing on her own.

Doctors are guarded in their expectations for the 4-year-old girl who was critically injured in Sunday's tornado, said an uncle, Todd Hanson. Annika's 2-year-old brother, Nathaniel, was killed. "The injuries we're seeing are pretty significant," Hanson said of Annika, whom he described as "just so precious."

As many as six tornadoes tore through Kearney late Thursday afternoon, causing extensive damage to houses, mobile home parks and apartment complexes. The storms also led to the derailment of a train just outside of town and caused damage at the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.

No injuries had been reported by 6:30 p.m., an hour after the storms hit. But officials were just beginning to assess the damage, a process complicated by ongoing reports of twisters and thunderstorms.

The number of tornadoes so ar in 2008 - 1,191 - is nearly double what it was for the same period in 2007, said Harold Brooks, a researcher with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla. At this time in 2007, 659 tornadoes had been reported. In the past 10 years, the average number of tornadoes has been 1,254. Tornadoes in 2008 also have proved to be deadlier than those in previous years - 111 people already have died this year from U.S. tornadoes.
