Nor a statement that minorities as a whole or more than people of other groups have people like that.

who are not rich white men -- women, blue collar workers, ethinic minorities and so on. John Dean's book is great on this topic.
I see that I put it hamfistedly, demdog78. Sorry about that. My mind just went to the next biggest frame, i.e., why does anyone but a rich white man go for this sh!t.

Actually, I have been thinking a lot about this lately. I think I'm going to take some time and write something out; as it pertains to minorities.
Considering that the only minority group that really votes republican are latino... There are actually many factors to consider; some none of their fault.
I'll probably put it up some time tomorrow or Sunday.
But no harm done. I read a lot of your threads, and that response just surprised me.

they are siding with small government, fiscally responsible, compasionate conservatives.
And, Latinos get more liberal every generation. We typically vote with Democrats except for the anti-Castro Cubans and that's only the elder gen (to make a huge generalizatin). Even Catholic Latinos don't generally vote on abortion as some fundies do.
So, we're really talking about a small subset of any minority -- except women. That's the real puzzle. Why the hell do women vote with Republicans?!

27. That's true to a point. Our families have a whole layer of communal |
|
living that doesn't really exist up here in any scale. Property can belong to "the family", neighbors are real neighbors not just people who live next to you, and so on. There's a sense of continuity with a community that doesn't really have a cognate in mainstream American culture right now except in the movies.
It's exactly there that the Democratic Party is appealing and that the Republican "I got mine" Party isn't very appealing to most of those Latino families. That's why Latino women don't vote abortion. That's a private matter. We vote with unions and immigration policy and other programs that involve the good of the group.
We're actually under the radar commies! lol

It annoys me to no end that my mom voted McCain. I just don't understand it, but feel it has something to do w/ religion and the whole authoritatian thing. She isn't a bible thumper, but seems to think that religion is the answer for everyone, regardless of their problems. She doesn't get it and I simply cannot talk politics with her. I get so mad when I think about her political views.

My mom never came back from PUMAville this cycle and it's so shocking to me. She's always been a vigorous Democrat and this is the very first election week I can't share with her.
My mom was single, though. She never had to negotiate her political views with anyone in the family.

11. Tokenism and exceptionalism. |
|
It's quite lucrative to be the emblem of selling out. The people who really have all the power pat you on the head and tell you how "different" you are from the rest of your ilk. You believe it and eagerly carry their water, while telling everyone within earshot how much people in your group suck, while you are the "exception".

12. Many minorities tend to identify with what the Republican party actually |
|
"claims" to support.
The term Compassionate Conservative...
Most who support it probably do not realize that the pugs are actually lying pieces of shit.
As far as lack of brain cells... or any other rude comments about being stupid...
You take a bunch of poor people... Which means they are systematically under-educated... Many of them don't have the ability to actually go out and find the truth. Not everyone in this country has a computer or internet or access to one at a library.
Quite frankly, I am really disappointed at the lack of understanding by some of the comments in this thread. I expect better than that from DU.

"The term Compassionate Conservative...

There were a few Conservatives I used to debate with back and forth (someplace else) who steadfastly believed the shit they heard on Fox "News" even though I...and a whole bunch of others...pointed them in a different direction.
We showed them the blatant lies. In some cases these people were willing to admit they were lies...but knowing about the lies and the liars who told them didn't change their minds one iota.
Not even when it could be shown that their standard of living...their very jobs and homes could be...in fact, were.... in grave danger because of Republican policies, these people stubbornly refused to change their minds.
Nope. They're voting Republican all the way.
It's like a disease or something....
So it's not always ignorance that causes people to act against their own best interests....

34. If it makes you feel better, most don't |

I saw a chart once that had various branches of christian faith and how they broke down in politics with some being middle and some leaning GOP. At the end it said 'all other faiths/no faith' and it was about 80-14 democratic (all other faiths=anything but christianity).
Blacks break dem 90-10. GLBT about 75-25. Latinos generally about 65-35 although BUsh made some inroads the bigotry against immigrants pushed latinos back into the dem column.
As to why some do, I guess people are complex. I hear alot of stuff about how the poor who vote GOP are voting against their own economic interest (which they are) but alot of rich celebrities support democrats even though they will see their taxes go up. I assume single issue voters or voters with serious concerns about isolated issues (guns, abortion, etc) vote even though they know the party they are voted for is full of people who have fought tooth and nail to keep them from being allowed to vote (or own property, intermarry, get a good job, etc) in the first place.
As far as black GOPers, look up Lawrence King or Ken Blackwell to get an idea what kind of black person is actually attracted to the GOP.
