Sen. Stevens Pins Re-Election Hopes on Two Minutes of Television

Fighting a criminal conviction and backlash from his Senate colleagues, Ted Stevens is hoping Alaskans will take a two-minute time-out from Monday night football to hear him out.

Stevens, the Senate’s longest-serving Republican, bought two minutes of airtime on each of seven stations to make his case for re-election.

“Without the filter of the media, Alaskans will be able to hear from Senator Stevens in his own words,” said the announcement from the Stevens campaign.

On Tuesday, Alaskans go to the polls to choose between Stevens and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich, a Democrat who has pulled ahead in opinion surveys.

Stevens’ effort to win a seventh full term in the Senate has been made more difficult by the words of a federal court jury in Washington, which found him guilty on seven counts of knowingly omitting expensive gifts and services from an annual form designed to illuminate places where personal gain and political connections might come together.

Stevens is appealing and in a debate said he believes he wasn’t convicted and will be exonerated in the end.

reelection. A convicted felon, who refused to step aside, and who will surely be expelled if he wins his challenge. I think Ted's trying to hold onto the seat for Sarah, or that other wingnut who's leaving the House.
