They talked about kids being deprived of jobs and admission to college and other opportunities because of a "crime' that clogs up the judicial system and takes valuable time away from fighting real criminals.

Nothing but animal cruelty. Making it illegal is definitely the right thing to do, and protecting the animals involved is definitely more important than decriminalizing some trivial self-indulgence.
