Lawsuit to stop Prop. 8 to be filed with Calif. Supreme Court at noon today
http://www.americablog.com/2008/11/lawsuit-to-be-filed-to-stop-prop-8-hate.html

Attorney Gloria Allred and her clients, Robin Tyler and Diane Olson, will hold a news conference today November 5, 2008 at 12:00 noon at 6300 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1500 L.A. to announce a new lawsuit against Prop. 8. Prop. 8 intended to ban same gender marriages in California.

Ms. Allred and her law firm represented the couple in their victory before the California Supreme Court. Her clients became the first to marry in Los Angeles County in June.

Ms. Allred will file the new lawsuit today with the California Supreme Court on behalf of the couple. The new lawsuit will contain a new and controversial legal argument as to why Prop. 8 is unconstitutional. Copies of the lawsuit will be provided to the press at the news conference.

1. Here we go
I don't think it's a done deal by any means. The original action was judicial. I have a feeling a court is going to settle this.

6. Me, too. People have to be dragged kicking a screaming to justice
sometimes. It ain't over.

And we should keep our signs up or put up new ones, "STILL No on H8" and keep them up.

2. The bigots got their little plastic trophy for now
I hope they stow it away carefully in the attic so their ancestors know what they stood for

8. You said it
I think they'll be boo-hoo-hooing into the trophy soon, and I want to start with the assholes across from Lake Merritt near where I get on the freeway. Awful, nasty bastards.

26. One of my neighbors had eight Yes on 8 signs in front of their property.
Cute huh. I really want to put up a sign that states, "Bigots Live Here". I know I can't but if only.

3. Good.
Frankly, I hate the initiative process. It is stupid. We elect people to govern for us.

Here in Washington, we are CONSTANTLY having to fend off bad initiatives. Sadly, a few slip through. A wicked man named Tim Eyman thinks he is the de facto governor of our state - doesn't have the cojones to run for office, but tries to govern us anyway, with help from rich, out-of-state corporations.

9. Works
Cause folks don't pay attention to them. and when they pass.. they have no one to blame. It's said that the folks voted for it, so most folks must want it that way.

Even on Home Owner Ass, stuff. EVERYONE in my area things much of the rules are stupid. But when it comes time to do anything about it.. nothing. No voting, etc.. Everyone thinks someone else will make the effort to show up and vote the stupid stuff off the rule books.

I'm in Florida. We had Ad 2. Stating a mariage is only between a man and a woman. Many didn't realize it was on there. And when they read it, still couldn't figure out which way to vote on it. Legeal wording is just weird for folks. Plus, voting is like taking a test.. some folks freak out. So it's best to think about, know and understand before showing up.

How many really do that? Mnay ignore it, and just 'guess' at the last minute.

People need to pass out cards for voters. Where they can write there own choices before hand. Use the excuse that it will speed up voting, etc. Maybe folks would 'pre-vote' and take it with them to answer the ballot.. LOL! They might actually THINK about those stupid add ons, at a time and place where they can figure out what they mean.

13. I've had to vote on a bunch of crap that I really don't know enough about
and I educate myself. We've had to vote on bear baiting, hate crimes, parks, schools, etc. - often all on the same ballot.

Damn it, we pay people to do this.

I'll have to check how it turned out, but there was actually an initiative this time to make the initiative process harder.

21. Good. Let us know.
My cousin and his boyfriend got legally married on Nov 1, the 10-year anniversary of the day they got together. I don't live in CA, but I'll gladly donate all I can to support their rights.

Let's pray

Dear Jesus, please give these folks the power to show you have mercy on all people. Please let the one gift you gave us all, life, be that of happiness. Show those that choose to use your name to spread hate that your stance is clear... that you want people to leave the world a better place than they found it, and that the gift of love is great, and blind.

A-men

20. Cool. I heard people talking about this last night at Democratic celebrations in San Diego
There is no reason to wait.

Of course if the courts reverse it there will be recall elections for judges or state SC justices, but that is probably all going to have to work its way through.

22. I hope this is based on state constitutional grounds,
and not a Loving v. Virginia type complaint.

Legally, such a complaint would be correct - but unlikely to succeed past the California Supreme Court. Bad US Supreme Court law is far harder to reverse than no US Supreme Court law. If this goes to the US Supreme Court now, it will set us back for years. (Think Roe v. Wade - it is likely the majority of the court today would have decided it very differently, but they have enough respect for prior decisions of the court to only nibble away at it.

I don't want a reverse Loving v Virginia type case that we can only nibble away at but not reverse - even if it takes a bit longer.

25. RIGHT ON. LETS COUNT THE VOTES FIRST.
Masive huge voter purges in Los Angeles all voer the county in Dem areas. Voters came to vote with sample ballots in their hands, after voting for years and could NOT vote. They all cast rpovisional ballots. 28 days to count them.
We have precincts with 37% voters missing from the roster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

25%, 30% voters removed from the roster, polling places swicthed. Millions of uncounted votes people.
mostly young and black people.
students.
there were riots at one polling place last night as angry voters with sample ballots and reigstration documentss in their hands could not vote on regular ballots.
