Does anyone have a connection to Obama in order to get two dolls as gifts to Obama's daughters
from my doll Group? There is talk that they want to pitch in and buy them two very very special and pertinent dolls. Not cheap either. Can you email me for particulars????

The money they are willing to shell out for "not cheap" dolls could be given to Toys For Tots or some other organization to help needy children to have a nice Christmas.

7. They are Sasha dolls.
Not the Bratz kind but the kind that are not made anymore and were originally made in England or Germany. I belong to the doll group and they want to buy one for each of the daughters. They are worth well over 100 a piece for the lowest end ones. Some are worth about a thousand dollars. This is not Bride of Chucky. They are not like regular dolls in the sense that their value and history of the dolls are very interesting. This is not the type of doll we would give a a poor family. Sorry. Although many of the people in my Group raise thousands of dollars for poor children and for childhood illnesses.

9. Ok you had me until "this is not the type of doll we would give a poor family"
What? So these extra special dolls should just be locked up and looked at and not touched?
Because if they are supposed to be loved and cherished as toys and not collectibles, why would you assume a "poor" family would not not care for it?

I am beyond disgusted

20. I think I understand
These seem to be dolls to keep and cherish; a poor family would not keep and cherish them but would instead sell them, probably to someone who sees them in terms of dollar signs.

Obama's children will keep and cherish them.

23. Ooooh I see...poor people and their children cannot cherish things
they will probably sell them for crack... because all poor people sell everything worth anything, and clearly most poor people are on crack.
:sarcasm:

As a former poor child, I cherished everything I had because I had so little. I still have toys from my childhood (yes even collectibles like a Wizard of Oz set and my Muhammad Ali doll) they are in excellent condition because my mom taught me to take care of my things. And when we were homeless.... we could have sold a doll I had from my great-grandmother from Norway which is worth a lot... could have sold it for food, but because of its history and sentimental value we didn't.

Maybe I wasn't poor enough.

25. Actually...I was thinking "sell them for housing or utilities"
My wife grew up poor, and I just asked her what her family would have done if she was given a $100 doll. She claims they would have sold it to pay the light bill.

But seriously, folks...let's say these are $250 dolls, and we're talking about two of them. Would it be better, if you wanted to spend $500 for gifts for poor children, to:

1) buy two $250 dolls and make two little girls happy

or

2) buy ten $50 dolls (or twenty $25 dolls) and make that many more children happy?

(Most poor people are on crack? I never said that, because it's not true.)

.....and got stuck in "The Holly Hobby Room." Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep - I think I slept with my pocket knife out.

Like captain Quint says:

Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin'

My ex dated a woman who had some insane antique doll collection in her bedroom and said he couldn't sleep at her place. He placed one under the wheel of his pick-up truck and she just about had a breakdown (no damage to the doll, just the owner...).

Me? I can't help but think of that X-Files episode of the possessed doll. Chinga or something?

26. I was asking for several members of this doll group.
It is not my position to make the decision where these would go. They give thousands of dollars to childrens' causes every year. They just wanted to give a nice gift. Sorry for asking as I did not expect such rudeness. These dolls are fragile. They are not made anymore and unfortunately are very expensive. I am actually pretty surprised at getting attacked for wanting to help some elderly women who wanted to do this.

You did surprise and offend people by suggesting that poor children should not receive such a doll. Surely you did not mean that, did you? If you have been homeless yourself, you probably can understand the reaction your words elicited. Granted, DU is not known for tact or generosity in its reactions...but your wording was not very generous to the poor, either.

It is very nice of your group to think of Sasha and Malia. However, they have lots of nice things already and will certainly continue to receive many nice things. I suggest you talk to your group about donating to children who would not otherwise be able to own a nice doll. If you wanted to, your group could even do it in Sasha and Malia's name....and then send the girls a note letting them know of your gesture. I believe that would be much more appreciated by the Obama family than the dolls themselves.

36. Was just repeating the same "word" used by responder before me.
They, as I said, give "thousands" of dollars every year to solely children's charities, including Children's Diabetes, etc.... so I was just making an inquiry for them. Unfortunate but true, this type of doll is so fragile that even mine have to be stored in a manner that does not allow me to be particularly careless with them. They are strong but not that strong and unfortunately expensive and rare. But some people have been very helpful with info and I can try now to talk them out of it. I am not actually involved except that I was making an inquiry for them if there was a proper way to send it. Thanks again.

38. My reaction may have been rude... but your statement was offensive
Like I said earlier... I was with you and the intent until the statement "these are not the type of doll to give a poor family". Being treated like a second class citizen because of poverty is something many have experienced and that comment was a slap in the face.

28. Forget it
Presidents don't accept gifts from the public no matter what the gift is and the Obamas are certainly not going accept gifts for the girls. Gifts sent from the public are stored away or probably donated to a charity. They might keep gifts from foreign dignataries but most of those are not accepted personally but become property of the government. Forget the whole idea.

all sorts of things. 60 minutes (i think) did a show about this and it was very interesting--they have all these gifts that were given to presidents stored away in there. the records from the library of congress is there. original movies/films, photographs. if you haven't read up on this place i highly recommend reading about it. it is fascinating.

40. IRONY ALERT. Sasha doll creator wanted to make dolls that were affordable to the poor.
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 01:29 AM by FedUpWithIt All

She started to make toys, animals and dolls for her three children in the Twenties.

The toys, available in the shops, were expensive and she did not like them at all.

She tried to make her dream come true and was determined to produce human-like dolls which could be loved by children because they have a living expression. It is the play of the asymmetry in the proportions which brings across this living expression. An asymmetric construction of the doll forms a unity which is the basis for the multitude of expressions.

Later, with the help of a younger sculptor and moulder, Sasha began to make moulds in order to give solid bodies and limbs to the dolls. These hand-made dolls later became very expensive. Today, they are portrait dolls for parents or doll collectors.

However, she always wanted to make a doll for children that could also be bought by less well-off parents. In 1963, the first opportunity arose to develop a serially produced doll.
