The Two Basic Questions - Am I Safe? Am I Employed? |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 07:49 PM by Median Democrat
I see a lot of debates regarding idealogy, the DLC, etc. However, hopefully Democrats learn from the mistakes of the Republicans who got caught up with idealogical purity. Most Americans are not idealogues. The Right Wing mistakenly thought that labeling Obama a socialist, liberal, tax and spend democrat would win the day. They were wrong. In the end, the American people voted based on results.
Likewise, the success of Obama's Presidency will be assessed based on the questions of whether Americans feel safe and are employed. The problem is that Bush really, really screwed things up. It will be a tremendous struggle to merely return to the point we were at the end of Bill Clinton's presidency.
The Republican Party really destroyed themselves as they insisted upon idealogical purity such that they turned on John McCain who is very conservative, but not a complete right wing nut. Just 95%.
Hopefully, the Democratic party and Obama's priorities match their campaign rhetoric. I hope that Obama focuses on addressing the short temr financial crisis, implements a long term program for economic growth and infrastructure devleopment, and a program for energy independence.
Ultimately, the electorate is not idealogical. They demand results. Of course, results will be tough to achieve due to the massive screw-ups of the prior administration.
