E-Mail to Harry Reid re: Prop 8 |
|
Dear Senator Reid:
My name is Paul L. Sungenis. I am a Democratic committeeman from Cumberland County, New Jersey.
Earlier this year, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, of which you are a member, spent millions of dollars to help take away the civil rights of gays and lesbians in the State of California.
I find this act reprehensible, and especially so since a prominent member of that Church - you - has such a prominent leadership role within my party, which is supposed to be dedicated to the civil rights of, and welcoming to, all people.
Senator, you can no longer serve two masters. Either you must break with the leadership of your Church, loudly and publicly condemning them for this heinous action, or you must resign your leadership position within the Democratic Party. There is no other option.
I hope you will do the right thing.
Paul L. Sungenis, Vineland, NJ.

1. As good as your point is, |
|
Senators totally ignore e-mails from outside their state. Send a fax; it will be slightly harder to ignore.

2. Would you send that to Catholic politicians regarding abortion? |
|
Just asking.
I get extremely uncomfortable when this with us or against us stuff starts happening with religion.

3. I called my (Catholic) church when the pope said not to give communion to John Kerry |
|
From the response I got, it seemed that I was not the only one who had called.
I say get ALL CHURCHES OUT OF POLITICS now. And that includes my church, the LDS, the Southern Baptists, Sarah Palin's crazy church, and yes, the Trinity UCC.

9. I agree, churches and politics should be seperate. |
|
Any church that gets involved in any political issue should have it's tax exempt status removed. There's a separation of church and state for a reason.

4. If the Catholic Church gave all that money, yes. |
|
If I know a Democratic politician in leadership position who is in the Knights of Columbus, yes, I will send it.

10. I think pab's suggestion gives Reid a way out. |
|
He asks him to choose one of two things:
a. resign his leadership position
or
b. break with the leadership of your Church by loudly and publicly condemning their actions in regards to Prop Hate.
At least that's how I read it.
Even if my understanding is wrong, Reid can still interpret it that way, or he can refuse to renounce his religion while making the distinction that he disagrees with their choice in this matter, just like Brigam Young's great-great-great-great (?) grandson, Steve Young did.
Either way, Reid has options.
