ACLU wants probe into police-staged DNC protest

By Felisa Cardona
11/07/2008 10:25:14 AM MST

When a Jefferson County deputy unleashed pepper spray at unruly protesters on the first night of the Democratic National Convention, he did not know that his targets were undercover Denver police officers.

Now the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado is questioning whether that staged confrontation by police pretending to be violent inflamed other protesters or officers during the most intense night of the four-day event.

-snip

On Thursday, the ACLU of Colorado sent a letter to Denver's Independent Monitor, Richard Rosenthal, asking for the Internal Affairs Bureau to conduct an investigation of the pepper-spraying incident.

"The actions of the undercover detectives on August 25, 2008, may have had the effect of exacerbating an already 'tense situation,' as their feigned struggle led nearby officers and the public to believe that a commanding officer was being attacked by protestors and that the situation necessitated the use of chemical agents," says the letter, written by ACLU staff attorney Taylor Pendergrass.

"Such actions may have escalated the overall situation by causing officers on the scene to fear that the protestors threatened their safety, when in fact the struggle was only between uniformed officers and undercover officers," he wrote.

8. Agree. Although the demonstrations
themselves weren't even reported by the MSM. Can't very well expect them to do any follow up.

9. Oh jeez. How come I can't even mention this stuff without feeling like a tinfoil hat wacko...
and yet here it is, right out in the open and everyone will just gloss over it, forget about it and they'll carry on a usual. Sickening.

On the other hand  They deserved to be pepper sprayed.

10. Also, what's up with this?
"The officers testified in court that they had intelligence that anarchists planned to gather in the park, then move toward the 16th Street Mall to wreak havoc at delegate hotels and other businesses. The activists had posted that plan on a publicly available website."

Uh huh, sure. "Anarchists" posted that plan online. :eyes: :tinfoilhat:

11. Seems that the police are hiring scam artists.
No better way to "stop a crime" than to make the threat themselves then arrest others who had nothing to do with it.

15. I think we got a whiff in St. Paul
and even in "liberal" Seattle we saw this same behavior in 99 at the WTO protests. They have been doing this at least since then nationwide. It's part of the reason the protest movement is so stagnant. Mission accomplished.

16. Portland too!
I did a thread on a tape from the Portland police handling a demonstration. It was utterly
devastating. These locals really drank the cool aid. And yes, it's chilling.

17. Denver police: WE GET UP EARLY to BEAT the crowds.
Remember those T-shirts? Sounds like they wanted to make sure getting up early was worth it.

Police DNC T-Shirts Create Stir
Written by investigative reporter Brian Maass

DENVER (CBS4) ― A tongue-in-cheek t-shirt poking fun at Democratic National Convention protestors is selling fast and creating some minor controversy along the way.

The shirts were created and distributed by the Denver Police Protective Association, the union that represents most of Denver's 1,400 police officers.

The front of the black shirt shows the number "68" with a slash through it. One of the primary protest groups at last month's DNC in Denver called themselves "Recreate 68," harkening back to the violent, 1968 political convention in Chicago.

The back of the shirt features a menacing-looking police figure, wearing what looks like a Denver police badge and helmet and clutching a baton. He's looming over the city of Denver along with the slogan, "WE GET UP EARLY, to BEAT the crowds." Also written across the back of the shirt is "2008 DNC.'

... urged his Shittoheads to be as disruptive as possible.

I have to wonder just how many people were following his instructions. :eyes:
