Suspected Taliban militants in the volatile northwestern Pakistan took over a convoy of 13 trucks purportedly carrying containers with vehicles and supplies for NATO forces in neighbouring Afghanistan on Monday (Nov 10), local television reported.
It is being described as an embarrassing reversal for the NATO troops waging war on the Taliban in Afghanistan. But the Taliban have captured a number of Humvees belonging to American troops fighting under the NATO flag. And to rub salt into the wounds of the coalition forces the Taliban have released a video displaying their trophies.
The 13-truck convoy was ceased at different points along a 40 kilometres (25 miles) mountain road, said an official at the tribal administration office in Khyber Agency, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas along the Pakistan Afghanistan border. The official spoke to Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
He said dozens of gunmen blocked the road at different points along the route and ceased the vehicles and drove them away with their drivers. The official said the trucks were carrying vehicles and other supplies but no weapons or ammunition.
Pictures obtained from a freelance cameraman in the area showed masked men standing around what appeared to be three military humvees (high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles) and a number of covered trucks. The footage then showed the humvees being driven away.
