CRAP! (TPM) Reports Leadership Will Propose That Lieberman Keep Homeland Security Chairmanship
When Senate Dems caucus tomorrow, the Democratic leadership is likely to propose that he keep his homeland security chairmanship but lose a lesser sub-committee chairmanship instead, according to a source familiar with the situation.

If it happens that way, Senate Dems will be allowing Lieberman to keep his plum spot despite the fact that he has been a disaster at the post, and despite the fact that he endorsed efforts by the GOP to imply that Obama is in league with terrorists, suggested that Obama endangered our troops, and said Obama hasn't always put the country first.

According to the source, the Dem leadership is expected to propose instead that Lieberman be stripped of his chairmanship of the lesser Environment and Public Works subcommittee, a comparatively meaningless punitive action.

The move, which is not un-expected and was reported earlier in Roll Call, comes despite the fact that Lieberman had lost momentum in recent days, with Senators Patrick Leahy, Bernie Sanders and Byron Dorgan all expressing strong opposition to him keeping the chairmanship. Even a Lieberman ally, Senator Tom Carper, said today that Lieberman should face consequences that are not "insignificant."

7. Kos has a comment on this
Um, what idiot would think that taking away a subcommittee from Lieberman would be seen as a "stinging rebuke"? In whose DC-Beltway-addled mind is that even remotely punishment?

Let Lieberman keep that subcommittee. No one gives a shit about it. The only thing that matters, the only thing that Lieberman wants, and the only thing we don't want him to have -- is the chairmanship of the Homeland Security Committee.

If this is the "starting point", and given the Senate Democrats' history of capitulations, expect Lieberman to come out of that meeting as majority leader.

I'll wait until tomorrow myself but so far two sources have repeated the story.
I wish at least the final vote could be known not who voted what, but what the final tally was.

I think they are all in on the abuses of power we have seen from Bush. I believe they protected him from accountability because they too are part of his many crimes.

Time to wake up Democratic voters!

12. So we know who the traitorous Dems are, right?
So RIGHT NOW we start preparing for the next round of Senate elections, in ...2012, is it?

Obama has a big enough struggle with all the Republican caused issues.
Looks like he has to deal with his own party in the Senate.

Who on that committee were for the scurrilous quisling?

23. Before everyone decides this is the end of the world as we know it
why don't we wait and see how it plays out. Leadership has a major say-so in what the jurisdiction of a committee is and what legislation gets referred to a particular committee. Let's see what Lieberman's committee looks like when the new Congress finishes organizing itself. It may turn out to be less than what it is now.

26. Taking the high road is not always the best solution...
his Republican buddies have long preached personal responsibility and he has gone out of his way to affiliate himself with their point of view, so let's treat him as he has asked to be treated and hold him accountable for his betrayal. I don't see any advantage in leaving this Judas in the fold so he can time his next defection to maximize harm to the Democratic party. We know he can't be trusted, so why pretend?

28. How can anybody trust Lieberman to do anything??
Bayh was wrong. They can't just yank the chairmanship from him. It would be open to filibuster. The Dems did it when The Rs wanted to oust Mark Hatfield years ago. Lieberman is out for Lieberman. He will do what he wants, and they better hope it is what they want.
As far a 60votes go, why would anybody count on Lieberman for that?? I don't see an upside to keeping him in that position. It's too important.
Unless, as I read somewhere, they would dissolve that committee. Don't know how that works either.
This is very upsetting to me!! Why do you reward a traitor? He dissed all of us and enjoyed it.

Just like the Hillary leak -- it gives the party faithful time to come up with excuses to rationalize it all.

Trust me, they're both true. It they weren't a press release would have been submitted early on.

Don't ya just LERV ya some Rahm? :puke:
