That's less a rant about politics and more a rant about common sense. A few things I plan to say to my seventh grader's Civics teacher tomorrow...
You don't get to tell my seventh grader's class that there is no guarantee of separation of church and state in the first amendment. There's, I dunno, about 230 years behind that precedence.
You don't get to tell my kid that Obama is a socialist. Because it ain't true. It just isn't. Live in your fantasy world on your own time, not my kid's.
You don't get to tell my kid that Democrats are gonna take away gun rights. Cause, hey, we aren't! The Brady Bill was passed during a Republican administration in response to Reagan's shooting. Clinton let it expire. Obama ain't gonna pick it up. It's political suicide and the man is smart enough to know that.
You don't get to tell the kid that the military supported McCain. Believe it or not, being an Army brat, she knows better. She has great uncle uncle who is a Medal of Honor winner, a grandfather who is a Bronze Star winner, and a father, who is military but as a civilian is a Medal of Valor winner. She knows service when she sees it. Hell. How could she avoid it? She's never known anything else. Since she was born, her dad has been gone about 5 years total. She's 12 years old. This isn't 5 years he was just gone. This was 5 years he was in dangerous parts of the world. Years he was deployed. Years he was on assignments he still can't talk about. And when he's home? It ain't any safer. He got shot when he was home. That's an aftermath we'll be dealing with for a long time.
Keep your Southern Protestant we're king of the world crap to yourself. My family isn't Protestant.
Also, lawyers are not all evil. I know because when my daughters were babies and the Army wasn't paying us shit, my mother made sure they got to eat. As a matter of fact, my mom made sure that not only her kids didn't starve in the 80s and 90s, but her client's kids didn't either! We are not any better off for TORT reform. We are much worse off and everyone refuses to see it. Well, except anyone forced into bankruptcy because of bad decisions on the part of insurance companies and doctors. They know. And they are strangely silent. Republicans, you think?
So after months of biting my tongue, I'm off to raise hell at school tomorrow. I tried to let it go really, because my girls are strong enough to stand up for their own positions. But this teacher has really really crossed a line, and I'm done. The thing that makes absolutely no sense to me is our school is about 70% AA. We aren't. But this is the only Civics teacher in the grade. Isn't anyone else bitching? Maybe not. We're all worried about high school placements, etc. I'm raising hell though. I'm just done.
