If the $700 billion was given to every citizen of the U.S., we'd each only get $2300 |
|
Please ignore the bogus posts from the mathematically-challenged.
Even if you gave it only to every household, you're talking about about $10,000 for each - nothing near the $100,000 or $1,000,000 that some math-illiterates are saying in the SPAM emails and silly OPs.

1. By your logic, why not hand out $1.4 trillion? "Only" $4600 per person. |
|
Since you can't retire on that, why not just it away to Saudi princes? :eyes:

2. isn't that point that the 700 billion COSTS all of us "only" $2300? |
|
or costs our grandkids $4000 by the time interest is charged?

3. The point of my OP is about the posts saying they should "give each of us $100,000 instead" |

12. but certainly no chance of it stimulating the economy |

which paying off credit cards or saving the money would fail to do.

the first $700 billion, or the second or the new $800 billion more? How about the trillions given by the Fed?
In bailouts so far, we are moving closer to the neighborhood of $100K per household.

8. The new $800B isn't from the treasury, it is the Federal Reserve Bank buying loans... |
|
...and that ISN'T taxpayer money.

6. It wouldn't be given to us; it would be a loan |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 12:52 PM by HamdenRice
That's what almost no one seems to be understanding about the bailout. The government is not "giving" money to the banks. It is lending the money in the form of preferred stock, or accepting banks' assets as collateral.
If the government offered me a $2,300 loan, I probably wouldn't take it.
A company can take a loan and make money off the loan and pay it back. Most consumers would just spend it, and then be in debt.

But not every citizen is in need of relief. Do we though life preservers to people on the shore as well as those in the water?
So many seem to have real problems if someone else gets something they do not, even if they themselves dont keed help.
