Go see "Milk" -- but NOT at a Cinemark Theater!
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 02:07 PM by SallyMander

I am posting the text from a group created on Facebook that aims to get people to see the movie "Milk" (coming out Dec 5) somewhere OTHER than a Cinemark Theater. The CEO of Cinemark donated $9,999 to the Yes on 8 campaign in California. As the Facebook group founders say, "If 1,000 of us commit to see "Milk" at a competitor's theater instead of Cinemark, at an average cost of $10 per ticket, that's $10,000 of lost revenue."

I think this is a *great* idea and deserves wider recognition than Facebook -- although there are over 18,000 members to the group there already! Please give this a K&R if you plan to spend your money at a theater other than Cinemark. (And, if you're on Facebook, bounce on over and join the group there too!)

Don't let Cinemark profit from Harvey Milk's legacy!

This group is specific to the promotion of Gus Van Sant's incredible film "Milk" and raising visibility around Cinemark CEO Alan Stock's $9,999 donation to Yes on 8. If 1,000 of us commit to see "Milk" at a competitor's theater instead of Cinemark, at an average cost of $10 per ticket, that's $10,000 of lost revenue.

Help us reach 1,000 members so we can send a message to Mr. Stock: You will not profit from hate!

We are organizing this boycott to support the complete "Boycott Cinemark" movement.
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=48645921092

We want you to see Gus Van Sant's MILK.

We REALLY want you to see Gus Van Sant's MILK.

But the CEO of Cinemark Theaters (Century Theaters, CinéArts and Tinseltown) thinks he can make large donations to Yes on Prop 8 and still profit off Harvey Milk's legacy.

This is wrong, and we cannot support it.

DON'T FINANCE YOUR OWN OPPRESSION!

*If you have the choice*, SEE THIS FILM SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Background
---------------------------------------------------------
The CEO of Cinemark, Alan Stock, donated $9999 to the Yes on 8 Campaign, but now expects to profit from showing MILK in his theaters.

If 1,000 of us commit to see MILK at a competitor's theater instead of Cinemark, at an average cost of $10 per ticket, that's $10,000 of lost revenue.

Boycotts work. A boycott of a Sacramento theatre company resulted not only in the resignation of a Yes on 8 contributor, but a public apology and donation to Human Rights Campaign! We can do this again.

Why *another* boycott against Cinemark?
---------------------------------------------------------
While we support a complete boycott of Cinemark's properties, not everyone agrees. But what we can ALL agree on is that Cinemark profiting off of Harvey Milk's legacy is an insult to our community, and we cannot support it with our dollars.

Some others I can't think of right now.

There's only one Cinemark in my town that I know of, and it's too far away for me anyhow.
