LA gun amnesty sees record spike as economy bites

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — An annual "guns for gifts" amnesty scheme in the crime-ridden Los Angeles district of Compton saw a record spike in yet another sign of the ailing US economy, official figures showed Monday. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department has offered electronics store and supermarket gift vouchers in exchange for firearms since 2005 in an innovative tactic aimed at ridding Compton of illegally held weapons.

Last year a total of 387 guns were gathered as part of the drive, which sees 100 dollar gift vouchers given for people turning in firearms and 200 dollar tokens for assault weapons.

This year's drive however saw a record haul of 965 guns, with sheriff's department officials speculating the return was a result of the faltering economy, and noting that more people were asking for supermarket vouchers.

"One guy said he had just got laid off from his job," Woods said. "He turned in five guns and said it would really help him to put food on the family's table." Police will check to see if any of the weapons have been used in crimes before destroying them.

Among the weapons handed in this year were a Soviet-era semi-automatic carbine and two hand grenades, local media reported.

1. I'm surprised the freepers haven't called this a conspiracy
Ralph's and Target are in cahoots with Obama to take away our guns! Oh noes!

Sigh. Give 'em time, I guess. It takes them a while to make their thinkers work.

2. Just once...
I'd love to set-up a table outside one of these "buy back" programs and offer the seller more cash than the cops.

%95 of the turn-ins are probably pieces of junk, but you never know... there could be that elusive diamond in the rough, or Granny looking to get rid of that rare P-08 Luger that her long dead husband liberated from a German staff officer.

3. I know what you mean
An FFL would come in handy for just that...

Speaking of diamonds in the rough, a Soviet-era semi-automatic carbine might fit the bill.

8. If it was an SKS 45 made before 2008, anyone with a C&R license could buy it
As a matter of fact, you don't even need an FFL to buy a California-legal long gun that is a curio or relic, from an unlicensed individual.

12. True. I didn't think about the C&R license
And the added advantage is that ATF doesn't show up at your door at random intervals.

one nice .45. With 387-965 guns at a time, there has to be some real nice pieces in there!

5. A good idea...
To at least get some illegal guns off the streets. None of these are actually legal guns. They probably have the same people coming back every year, because they keep stealing more and more guns.

6. Almost any working modern gun is worth more than 100 and every working assault weapon more than 200
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 11:26 AM by aikoaiko

California gun laws are sketchy and I don't know how easy it is to resell in California, but its easy in most other states.

The Police should resell the working guns to law abiding folks through an FFL and let gunsmiths with FFL have the nonworking guns.

9. Weapons that are classified as California AWs can't be re-sold here
It's pretty ridiculous.

11. Yes, anything that is federally legal can be sold to an OOS FFL
The state is more than happy to let you send firearms to other states.
