Do you realize that the Shoe Toss is the only real visible sign of resistance Bush as seen in offfic
That one man did far more to express his outrage at George Bush than the entire rest of the world has in 8 years. The entire rest of the world, and this is the strongest response to that madman that all of humanity could come up with.

1. Well, almost. There have been some street protests and effigy burning.

3. I beg to differ. Stephen Colbert expressed my outrage far better . . .
and with considerable more panache at the Correspondents' Dinner in 2006. That event, to me, marked the beginning of the end for BushCo.

12. CIndy Sheehan was also great
and several others tore him to shreds after Katrina. Still this was the first Iraqi to get a chance to show the love and he made a statement to the world. It is profound. As Howard Fineman pointed out this will leave a more lasting mark than even Mission Accomplished. That's true because it was done by a citizens of Iraq. W will take this to the grave and beyond.

Iraq Parliamentary Elections: Allawi Gets The Boot

If you recall, Najaf is the home base of Moktada al-Sadr, now a coalition partner in the main Shi'ite electoral slate, the United Iraqi Alliance. Also, Najaf was the scene of a military standoff in August 2004 between U.S. troops and al-Sadr's militia. As the Prime Minister at the time, Allawi, a secular Shi'ite (and ex-C.I.A. operative) stood solidly behind the U.S. effort.

It may have been because he interrupted a funeral. (In the third shot from the top, you can see a casket being led out the entrance with Allawi's contingent just beyond.) The yellow circles in the next two shots are not thought bubbles. They are evidentiary circles drawn to point out how Allawi and company were run off in a hail of shoes.

I guess Allawi's Ba'athist past doesn't make him the most popular guy in more religious Shi'ite strongholds. Many cultures have unique rituals of social denunciation. In Iraq, as I'm told, the throwing of shoes is the single worst insult that a person can make.

Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 08:28 PM by Uzybone
Both his inaugurals, the Iraq war protests very quickly come to mind. I know he is in a bubble but to say the shoe toss is the only visible resistance he has seen is nonsense.

15. Well there was that little thing where millions of us marched on Feb. 15th 2003.
That was fairly high profile and obvious.

But yeah, the shoe thing has been so cathartic.

19. No it wasn't. I was there, but Bush wasn't. He was out of town if you wish to recall.
Congress was not in session at the time either.

22. How convenient. I vaguely recall that.
But I do remember marching through grocery stores with drums and bugles.

We had a pretty good time. Arcata, California. The first city to vote for articles of impeachment.

26. Bush called that march a 'focus group'
Even though millions marched all over the world that day. He flatly said, "I don't make decisions based on focus groups"

21. Bush's limousine was egged on his on his inauguration day.
His inauguration ride down Pennsylvania was not a pleasant one....more like a gauntlet.
His limo was pelted with eggs and other objects.
Instead of a slow victory parade capped with a triumphant and traditional walk into the White House, Bush's limo was forced to speed down the avenue and into the safety of the portico.

23. I disagree....
It's faded from most people's memories, but do you remember the eggs splattering on the limo during the inauguration parade of 2001? This jerk has been protested from day one.

Like the Battle of the Pretzel...

The Great Segway Massacre....

And who among us can ever forget the bravery he showed during his short but courageous fight in China with the door that wouldn't open...
