What kind of people would assault a fellow countryman for insulting a foreign dictator? |

That I wonder. The people who charged the shoethrower and beat him after the incident. They must be the lowest worthless scum on the planet.

From what I understood, Iraqis in Sadr City, where this journalist came from, have taken to the streets in support of him, consider him a hero, and are protesting his arrest...

... same as if he had heaved a brick at Bush. The beating is not-legal, but the take-down and the arrest were absolutely justified.
