27mpg Cadillac Escalade
Cadillac Escalade Hybrid. MPG king

Compare this to a Toyota Landcruiser

Escalade - $71,685, 27mpg, 5708 lbs
Landcruiser -$67,000, 18mpg 5690 lbs

I guess it's Toyota that sucks.

1. I'm more struck by the price tags. I owned at least 4 houses that cost less. I bought a
3 bedroom, 2 bath house for my son for only $63K last July! Why would anybody put that kind of money into a car?

9. You just have to know where to look.
We just bought a new house for my mother to move into after the fire. Two bedroom, barn, outbuildings, and 2-1/2 acres including a pond for $49,900.00.

17. Go to upstate New York for awhile.
My place (4 bed, 2 bath, 2 outbuildings, 14 acres) was originally sold at $70k a few years ago, though it's gone up since then due to improvements.

28. why the fetish over cheap real estate?
people live where they work, where they have family, friends, where they are attached to the community.

i'm not going to put cheap real estate over all these other things. all things being equal saving on housing would be a good thing, but all things are not equal for almost everybody.

30. yes, there is a fetish here about cheap real estate
Edited on Sat Jan-03-09 12:01 PM by CreekDog
nobody used that word but that's what it's coming down to.

it's like my friend said when told that houses were only 100k in Phoenix (back when they were).

he said in response, "So? I don't live in Phoenix. What does that have to do with me?" (we live in the Bay Area)

there is a huge amount of judgement coming down on people who had the temerity to simply live where they were born. I was born in working class in a then affordable area. I have chosen to stay here at great expense. I'm not complaining about it, but I am telling people who act as if those of us that live here are somehow greedy or irresponsible for spending what we need to in order to call our longtime hometowns our home.

there is an implication here that people in expensive areas are doing something wrong, that they should live elsewhere or that you can compare spending $1000/month in Iowa for a house with $2500-3500/month minimum here. well, if you live here and have to "modest" incomes of 50-60k each, you probably will spend $2500/month to live here because that's what it costs to live in an acceptable neighborhood and not share bedrooms with your kids.

that's my beef with this thread.

6. ...because they HAVE the money to spend.
The people buying $70k Escalades also have $500k houses. They have the money to spend, so they spend it on things they like.

8. I don't think most luxury car buyers have the money to spend...
They have the credit to borrow, and think they have the cashflow to repay it.

15. Maybe in the past, but credit is tighter now.
Yes, they're still buying on credit...but if they're getting approved for an Escalade, they can afford it.

2. 27 mpg sucks for a hybrid.
But the problem isn't the hybrid power, it's the fact that the vehicle is way too large and too heavy for the average American driver. You can fit 4 kids and the dog in a compact car.

16. But a 20-50% increase in fuel efficiency is nice...
...and an example to be emulated: http://www.greencar.com/features/27-mpg-in-a-2009-cadillac-escalade-hybrid/

I mean, emulated in models that aren't embarrassing monuments to conspicuous consumption. :D

5. Actually, I thought it was a little bit worse than that. It's a great car, but I passed on the
Hybrid version because it was an extra 2.5k for an estimated 2mpg. They created that Hybrid just to say they had one, but they can't expect anyone to seriously consider it with such low mpg.

10. Somebody in an Escalade almost blinded me in a parking lot on New Years Eve.

Damn pig was idling their engine while occupying the space facing me and would NOT shut their hi-beam Xenon headlights off while I was trying to back out of my space. I had to creep out carefully and pray that I didn't hit some poor innocent walking behind me while I was backing out. I really could NOT see!

I had blue spots in my vision from those headlights for several minutes afterward.

Damn pig, burning up the planet's natural resources to keep warm in the in their damn $72,000 vehicle, and too damn lazy to reach over and shut their damn lights off.

And then here's me trying to back out of the space in my 14 year old banged up car with the brakes and transmission about to go, wondering -- literally -- if I am going to be here next New Years Eve due to finances and other problems.

Edited on Fri Jan-02-09 10:23 PM by lumberjack_jeff
Toyota's piece of crap is an order of magnitude crappier than GM's.

Moving from the Landcruiser to the Escalade will save you $800/year*. That's exactly the same amount of money which is saved moving from the Escalade to the Prius.

*15k miles/year @ $3/gallon.

14. That's very impressive, and tells us what the (near) future could be for
all the 1/2 ton to 1 ton trucks on the road. The electric motors should be great for pulling heavy things, too.

And that's a hella lota gas savings. To go from 18 to 27 mpg saves much more gas than to go from 30 to 45 mpg (approx 65% more).

25. This is why you can't always trust "bloggers" regarding facts -
the official EPA numbers are 20 city, and 21 highway. For confirmation, go to www.fueleconomy.gov and click on "Compare Side by Side", "2009", "cadillac", and "Escalade Hybrid 2WD".

Or just look at the official page from Cadillac...

As pointed out upthread, you save the same amount of gas by moving from the Landcruiser to the hybrid Escalade as you save by moving from the Escalade to the Prius.
