Will the Religious Right Spoil the Inaugural Party?

A number of Religious Right groups, including Our Country Deserves Better PAC, preparing to take on the Obama Administration

The California-based PAC that failed to derail the presidential candidacy of Obama, intends to serve as ‘the loyal opposition’

In politics, commerce, and fundraising, timing is essential. The upcoming inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama is providing all sorts of opportunities for conservative organizations to market their messages and peddle some goods at the same time.

On January 8, the Christian Defense Coalition (CDC), an organization headed by Reverend Patrick J. Mahoney, announced that they had received permission to display what it calls a pro life vigil -- 25 large signs showing the development of life from conception to birth -- along the parade route during the Presidential Inauguration. Claiming that President-elect Obama is on the "wrong side of history and human rights by embracing the most radical abortion policies of any President in American history," Mahoney says that "While millions will be celebrating along the Inaugural Parade route, we will be speaking ‘truth to power’ and calling justice and equality for all Americans."

Repent America, another Christian conservative group, is planning “a massive evangelism effort in Washington, DC. church groups and individuals … hand out tracts and engage in one-on-one witnessing efforts during” Inauguration Day activities, according to a report by OneNewsNow, the America Family Association-sponsored news service. "We know ... president-elect Barack Obama a very aggressive, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual political figure -- and now he's going to be our president," Michael Marcavage, president of Repent America, told OneNewsNow. "So it's only expected that these particular things are going to be pushed in our nation even more."

may the 25 signs be torn down as soon as put up

1. First amendment
As much as I think these people are crazy, I support their right to speak out because taking their free speech rights away mean I lose mine too.

3. The sad part is that when Dems are in charge the number of abortions
actually decrease. Dems are better at family planning, prevention, education, and empowering women to take and get information and access to their needs... Also, with Dems they like things like equality, education, and fair pay.. so, the need to have an abortion because one more mouth is too much to feed decreases. These idiots are insane.

4. You have a right to life until you're born, then screw you!!!
Once you're born, you don't have rights to medical care - pull yourself up by your own bootstraps.

Once you're 18, you don't have a right to a living - either struggle, or join the military and kill for Republicans!

Once you're mauled in the military, you're on your own - all those battlefield injuries were "preexisting" - you don't get veterans benefits!

But when you're in the womb, you've got a RIGHT TO LIFE!!!!!1111oneoneeleven

Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate!

8. Yes they have there right
And it is refreshing that Mr. Obama is not trying to put them in free speech pens. Like Bush did.

But if anyone. who is really calm. who is in town that day, and knows about issues like Darfur, the loss of innocence due to war, global problems with Aids, and food shortages in Hatti, and Africa.

If anyone that knows about these things is around them, could you politely ask them how they feel about those lives. Not in one-up-manship, but just to see how much they have thought about those things.

I would be curious of their responces. They may know, and work on those issues, many churches do, I am just curious about there thoughts on those things.

that these so-called pro-lifers think died for our freedom. While they're at it line the roadways with the dead prisoners that were executed based on false testimony in court.

33. They've been curiously silent for the past eight years, though.
Just yesterday, Mr. Tesha and I were wondering if our local
anti-abortion nuts will resume their first-Saturday-of-every-month
fetus displays now that a Democrat is back in the Oval Office.

They stopped doing them immediately after Bush was elected, even
though he's done (essentially) squat to end abortions. But we're
pretty sure they'll be back now to once again pummel the Democrats.

39. Interesting thing is, that after
so many cycles of that you would think they (anti-abortion nuts) would realize how they and their issue are being USED and will likely never actually see anything done that might cause the loss of that emotional issue.

12. Counter with 50 very large and detailed pictures
of American babies and children that were abused, beaten and/or starved to death by parents that never wanted them.

of starving babies and children in Darfur

of blown up children in Iraq

And ask their supporters how many unwanted children languishing in orphanages and foster care they've adopted.

I can't be in DC the 20th, but I did just send the following email to Code Pink:

http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/contributors/1881

I can't be in DC for the Inauguration, but I've got $50.00 to help someone(s) defray the cost of being across the street from the Christian Defense Coalition photos with 25 large photos of Dead Palestinian Children and Crushed and Maimed Iraqis and American flag-draped coffins.

I've talked to at least one other person on the Democratic Underground who said she would give money to see this happen too.

I know you're probably busy, but if you can consider this, I hope very much that it would be right across from wherever the Christian Defense Coalition sets up. And, of course, photos would be greatly appreciated and quite useful. Let me know what you think.

p

...................

The email address I used was dc@codepinkalert.org - If anyone has a better one, perhaps you'll consider encourage Code Pink to respond to the CDC with our support.

31. WTF allowed this? B/c ALL posters, etc. are banned from the parade route?
This has to be something that is OFFICIALLY allowed to happen because any normal schmoe attending the inauguration is not allowed to have signs and/or posters.

This makes me effin' sick this is being allowed....what a disgrace!

Oh, intrepid DUers, can we somehow find out who gave the thumbs up on this. I want to know so that we can complain.

37. Here are the rules on signs
What's Prohibited Where
Many readers have been writing in to ask us about what they can and can't bring to inaugural events. Prohibited items for inauguration day have been popping up a lot in the news lately, but the reports don’t provide a full picture of what’s forbidden and what’s not. To make things easier, the following list is a compilation of some prohibited items, according to information provided by inauguration commitee, Secret Service and Metro officials.

The Obvious

No firearms (real or simulated)

No mace or pepper spray

No fireworks or other explosives

No animals other than service animals

No knives, blades or sharp objects

No pocket or hand tools such as the “Leatherman”

Security screeners have the power to prohibit any items that may pose a threat to the security of the event.

On the Mall

No tents or that includes no camping out

No glass bottles-

No alcohol

On the Metro

No bicycles for the entire inauguration weekend

No signs or placards more than 18 inches by 18 inches

No signs or placards affixed to a pole

No using metro bathrooms -- they will be closed for security purposes

No parking at Greenbelt, Van Dorn Street or Morgan Boulevard stations

No plastic or checks for Metro parking -- cash only

Along the Parade Route and at Official Balls

No bicycles

No backpacks, large bags, suitcases or duffel bags. Bags smaller than 8 inches by 6 inches by 4 inches are allowed.

No aerosol cans, which could include silly string

No coolers

No thermal or glass containers

No chairs or strollers

Signs are allowed, but only if they are no more than 3 feet in length, 20 feet wide or a quarter inch thick. They must be made out of poster board, cardboard or cloth.

Cameras are allowed; tripods and camera bags are not

No staking out spots until 7 a.m.
