Bush didn't pardon ANYONE? |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-20-09 11:36 PM by Marr
I had fully expected Bush to issue a lot of pardons for his inner circle in his last hours-- particularly for the DoJ firings case. I expected him to push the envelope with preemptive pardons, in fact. However, the only reports I've read on this subject cite only Bush's commutation of those two Border Patrol agents who shot a fleeing suspect. Is this the case? If so, I'm amazed.

1. Their closing argument is that they did nothing illegal. |
|
So this is why there were no pardons.
They are betting, and I would say pretty safely, that they do not have a legitimate fear of prosecution.

2. Maybe George Wacked Bush figured they'd keep their mouths shut if their necks were on the line. |

Given what I've been reading about the behavior of the prosecutors in the Stevens case, there just might be reasonable grounds for a new trial.
What the hell - he's out of the Senate. I could live with just that.

7. If anyone had been pardoned they would have been able to testify against him |
|
or others without being able to claim the right against self-incrimination. As it is, they can utilize their right against self-incrimination to refuse to testify about things in which they may have been involved.
Another poster on another thread suggested this as a possible reason.

9. The Border Patrol Agents didn't get pardoned |
|
They got their sentences commuted, meaning they still have those pesky felony convictions on their record.
