HAPPY NEW YEAR! To all our Asian and Asian American DUers, Happy Year of the Ox |
|
It seems particularly appropriate that as George W. Bush skulks out of Washington, D.C., the Year of the Rat comes to a close. As a hardworking, incoming president arrives to face the most formidable tasks since Frankin Delano Roosevelt arrived, the Year of the Ox begins.
Today is New Year's Eve for followers of the Chinese (and pan-Asian) Lunar calendar. More people around the world are traveling home, in the biggest annual migration on the planet, to be with friends and family than during any other holiday.
As Asia Times phrased it, "Can the ox - the strong, hard-working symbol for next year, which begins on January 26 on the Chinese lunar calendar - carry us forward to better times?"
There's no way to know, but I just want to say anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

2. There will be a meeting of all Asian DUers in the 4th floor telephone booth |
|
I remember reading a graffitti like this at NYU in the mid 80s, but it seems sadly appropriate for DU today.

7. Heh - I'm so used to the SEA, PDX, SFO demographic distribution... |
|
That whenever I go to the interior of the US, it takes me a little while to stop saying to myself "where'd all the asian folks go?".

새해 복 많이 받으세요
(typed phonetically because I don't know the correct romanization: ) Seh heh boke ma-nee bad-uh-seh-yoh.
I've lived in Korea for 3 years now and this is the first New Year that I haven't seen or heard fireworks. I wonder what's up.

(I am not Chinese, but several of my colleagues are, so it's an important occasion round here.)
