Read all about it here:

PS: correction: it's not an American Apparel ad.

13. i think this "American Apparel" guy was written about
in several articles as a sexist pig, so no surprises here.

the employment agreement that employees must sign off on includes the following:

One result of the lawsuits is a document that all American Apparel employees are now required to sign, which declares: "American Apparel is in the business of designing and manufacturing sexually charged T-shirts and intimate apparel, and uses sexually charged visual and oral communications in its marketing and sales activities. Employees working in the design, sales, marketing and other creative areas of the company will come into contact with sexually charged language and visual images. This is a part of the job for employees working in these areas."

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/23/magazine/23apparel.html?pagewanted=6

there really is nothing "sexually charged" about any of the actual APPAREL. only the marketing. what a douche.

of course the Men's Apparel part of the site doesn't have any provocative marketing. and they also sell kids and babies' apparel. so all of the actual "sexually charged" images and language is all about objectifying women. quelle surprise.

26. And funny, they sell babies, children's and men's clothing in realistic sizes
Edited on Wed Jan-28-09 05:00 PM by juno jones
If you go and measure their women's clothes, their XL is about a women's 10-12 and there are no plus sizes.

After reading the titbits in this article and thread, I will never offer them as a choice to our screenprinting customers again.

14. I knew Dov a decade ago (we bonded over our mutual hedonism...
and liberalism) and he was an extremely kind and considerate guy.
For the past several years, I have been amused by his masterful playing of the media.
However, this latest statement is very surprising. The Dov who I knew did not think like that.

I admit, it's easy to throw darts at people we don't know, especially when they're caught saying shit like this.

15. seems like an attempt to garner media attention... big surprise

AA sells clothes of a style that we used to simply buy separately back in the 80s and we got for much less money. And the clothes are usually in fairly small sizes.

21. They need to hear from us.
I checked their Wikipedia profile, expecting this to be typical of some bad company, but the profile shows a lot of good things. If they really are a good company, they need to know that this must STOP or they will lose the good will they have earned.

25. We worked with AA garments in our silkscreening buisness
It was nice to be able to furnish customer with a 'made in USA' choice, but the lack of realistic female sizes, overly slim cuts and overall flimsy quality combined with the outrageous prices (We would have to try to sell one of their shirts for at least $25-30 each to cover our own costs) kept us from really supporting their buisness.

For american made knitwear, start by checking out Dharma Trading Company of San Rafael, CA. I'm sure there are others.

It wouldn't surprise me if the company is sexist. The women's clothes are all cut and sized for model-thin girls size 0-10, just like you see in their underwear-laden ads.
