Beck and his "recovering alcoholic" thing is driving me nuts. |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 04:26 PM by virgogal
I was channel surfing and hit Fox (TV now off).
What the hell is it with him?
I have been in recovery for almost 29 years and never mention it in my daily life.
He seems to think he is something special because of it.
He isn't.

It will be 25 years for me this coming Halloween, and I don't bring it up either. I don't buy anything Beck says, so he may be a recovering alcoholic and he may not, just like Bush. I really don't believer for one minute that he ever stopped drinking, there were just to many signs during his two terms that made me think he never stopped! I don't watch Beck, but some of the rants I have heard on other shows makes me wonder if he is one "something", he just makes no sense at all to me. Now it could all be an act, and he may be getting a good laugh knowing he can say the most insane things and his group of gullible, crazy right wingers will follow his every word no matter what, but how any sane person could spend day after day listening to him is beyond me!

bogus search, I use seeming personal quips, seemingly blather, to create the impression of honest. Without divulging any pertinent info. So, the image you create, though bogus, seems forthright.

7. Some people think they need to preach at other people to stay sober, themselves, I guess. |

I've noticed that some of the worst right-wing asshats are ex-cokeheads. For some reason getting off that drug, in particular, seems to drive a certain segment far into whackjob Fundy territory.

11. Doesn't "sobriety" acually mean "soundness of mind"? |
|
Now, if "soundness of mind" is the litmus, then beck is a failure.

8. He doesnt seem to realize that bringing it up is not flattering |
|
and that he is unfamiliar with the term "white knuckle drunk". He also appears oblivious to the fact that he has merely exchanged one addiction for another. Frankly, I don't know which is more injurious.

Beck's problem is he's never been in a recovery process. Just putting the plug in the jug won't fix a practicing alcoholic, neither will clinging to organized religion, swearing allegiance to a cause or moving to a new location. Alcoholics are filled with "magical thinking" and magical thinking won't fix what's wrong with a practicing drunk. They say, alcohol is just a symptom of the disease and without a recovery process the character defects of a dry drunk will manifest themselves as highly irrational and dangerous behavior.
And that's Beck - one sick puppy.

17. Actually, Beck reeks of some of the worst cliches many of us have dealt with re: the 12 steps. |
|
"After he left Yale, his family helped him get sober by acquainting him with Alcoholics Anonymous."http://usconservatives.about.com/od/champions/p/Beck_Bio.htmhttp://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/09/beck.twelvesteps/index.htmlThe worst of them all is, "There's only ONE way to do it, and if you're not doing it the One Right Way™, you're not actually doing it"Uh Huh.

Barnum & Baily, scripted, attention mongering, money maker.
I wouldn't take any TV shows so seriously only because, the better your act, the more people watch. The content or intent doesn't really matter much. However, when I said scripted, I consider most of what comes out of Beck as having an intention from those behind the curtains.
Just remember, it is ONLY a TV show. If Beck really moves you and flips your chips, then consider him a superb actor in that respect.

18. because he blames liberals for his alcoholism |
|
He thinks liberal ideals promote things like drug abuse and over drinking. Thus he has good reason to mention it. To him it was his "liberal" lifestyle that lead to his divorce and substance abuse. If you understand that he has never accepted responsibility for his life choices and passes those responsibilities onto other people, you understand all there is to the man. He isn't a very interesting person at all.
