Do you think there are elements of racism in the modern day religious Right? |
|
I think there are, but their leaders learned how to "sanitize" it, if you will, with more neutral and acceptable discourse, which was meant to excuse and subsume racism underneath their religious beliefs.
When it comes to homophobia, however, they still use overtly bigoted language, so it's much easier to see through.

1. I don't think there are - I absolutely know there are |

I've known quite a few evangelical types, those on the very far right of the religious spectrum. Most of them do harbor some sort of racist sentiments. They might not come out and use the "n-word", but you can hear the disgust in their voice when they talk about what they perceive as "black issues".

The Religious Right is all a front to legitimatize racism and bigotry. You cannot talk theology to very many believers - they don't know it, aren't interested. The services are more like fascist political rallies - with the word "Jesus" thrown in once in a while - then they are like any traditional religious services.
This is not true of all Religious Right churches, but it is increasing and becoming more and more common. Notice it is called the "Religious" Right. It is all right wing politics with a thin veneer of "Jesus" overlaid so they can pass as a religion and have cover and legitimacy for their racism and bigotry.

Modern Christians are doing heroic things in the third world and in cities where there is poverty here in the United States. But those are the real Christians.
Right Wing Christians, on the other hand, can quote you every verse and chapter in the Bible that they
think proves the righteousness of slavery of the African people.
