Pelosi:BP lacked integrity, ought halt dividend

A top U.S. congressional leader on Thursday accused BP of a "lack of integrity" and urged the British energy giant to suspend its dividend to ensure victims of the Gulf oil spill are fully compensated.

House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, asked if BP should stop the dividend and focus on funding the cleanup of the worst oil spill in U.S. history, said: "Yes of course, and that would be their best public relations, instead of taking out all these ads."

BP has launched a multimillion-dollar public relations campaign to repair its image with Americans disgusted by the fouling of the Gulf Coast, where businesses complain livelihoods have been hit and BP compensation is insufficient.

This has angered U.S. politicians, not least President Barack Obama, who have persistently focused on BP's expected $10.5 billion annual dividend payout as they seek to deflect popular rage over the disaster toward the foreign firm.

1. Not sure that BP has the power to suspend their payment to shareholders after they declared
The quarterly dividend.

SEC rules, I believe.

3. BP's not the only ones that lack integrity - try the corporate media
BP, the government and the corporate media have lied about the amount of oil flowing from the one leak on the live feed, they have failed to reveal that there are two other leaks at the Deepwater Horizon site, as well as two leaks at other sites and have failed to tell people the far-reaching implications of this - which are more than just fouled beaches and dead marine life. Both nuclear and coal-fired power plants rely on Gulf water for cooling, and oil in the intakes could shut them down. Water purification plants that use reverse osmosis to convert seawater into drinking water could also be shut down due to oil in the intakes. The real costs of this will be staggering.
