Right on Mr Stewart
What a waste of an Oval Office speech & setting although it's a great place of SNL sketches.
This massive disaster is the equivalent of a direct attack on the shores and waters of America, and our country should have reacted as if we had been put under attack - because WE ARE UNDER ATTACK.
The President should declare that the military will defend our shores and take full control of the offending oil rig and freeze all BP funds in the US banks and financial institutions.

Because of when he tapes the show, everything is always a day late. Upside of that, is that it does allow him to throw in some of the more ridiculous bits from FAUX and Fools and the morning right wing radio shows on occasion.

I've been scanning posts around the web about BP's responsibility and cannot believe the forgiveness so many feel because it was 'an accident' that BP 'didn't intend'... people are missing the point that negligence counts. That paying off (or colluding with) the government (this is where hard evidence is sorely needed) to look the other way and 'trust the free market' is a crime. But conflicts of interest are accepted as the way business is done. I hope we learn.

A: They can't hear you so you are obviously performing for an audience.
B: The worst thing that happens when Stewart screws up is I don't smirk or laugh or I am not entertained. Oddly we actually require our leaders to do a bit more, so unfortunately the bar is slightly higher.
C: What they really "couldn't handle" is the idea that Obama is above criticism for some reason and being a crazy issues nut (like most progressives) I find idea to be absurd. I don't do personality, I do policy.
But I am just guessing here.

He showed clip of Obama's promises about Gitmo, rendition, trials, habeas corpus, and wiretapping.
Then showed the clips where he abandoned each and every one of these promises.
It was nothing but the "inconvenient truth."
If you have trouble accepting that, call or e-mail the Whitehouse.
Stewart was just reporting the facts.

Maybe someday the President will be able to do something to. Get a grip. You have absolutely no idea what charities and efforts Jon Stewart contributes to. For one thing he paid the salaries and protected the jobs of all his writers during the strike. His support of unions is well known and that is more than can be said for this Admin. And Jon isn't a talking head,he is a comedian and mocks everyone. It is too bad you haven't a sense of humour. And what have YOU done to make the world a better place?

Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 10:51 PM by walldude
Hmm... you know at the end of a loooong day, after slaving to the grind, after watching the Gulf turn black, after reading the latest smear of Gays, after watching people try to clean the oil off of birds in the gulf, after seeing the casualties in Afghanistan, I lay down in bed and flip on the TV. There is Jon Stewart, turning my incredibly foul mood into laughter and happiness. Then I think about the other millions of viewers who also slaved, and saw the world as I did. I think about how Jon is making them feel. Then I think about those millions who's foul moods have been turned to laughter and I wonder how many spouses, friends and children will avoid the inevitable blowback from those foul moods because Jon Stewart made them feel human again. Then I think of how useless Jon Stewart is.
Then I think how incredibly sad it is that a person could be so beholden to a politician that they would slam an individual who has spent years of his life bringing laughter and happiness into peoples lives, by calling him useless.
How many people did you make LAUGH today?

Yes...the "Obama farted too hard" vs "Obama isn't farting hard enough" every time he man passes gas from FOX News is truly comparable to holding his feet to the fire to make him keep more of his campaign promises. (Something he asked us to do in fact...)
Really...so easy to make that comparison. I can see how they often confuse the two.

It was Obama tearing Obama a new one.
Jon & staff merely assembled clips of Campaign Obama, and played them in sequence with President Obama directly contradicting himself...on rendition, Warantless Wiretapping, Guantanamo, Extra-Constitutional Prisons, and issuing Death Sentences from the White House.
It was sobering...not funny.

This type of language will not do anything good.
Attacking someone at the personal level (which I did not do, I asked *her* why she was behaving like a teen) does not do anything good.
Attackign someone's action, now that's something else.
"Ripping a new one" is not criticizing someone's action, it's just plain insult, the type of stuff you hear and see on the other side of the aisle.
We're better than that.
We don't have to walk in lockstep with Obama, but between insulting and criticizing, I pick the latter, as it is the positive approach.

I voted for Obama because:
#3: I'm a Democrat
#2: Because the thought of McCain/Palin in the WH made (and still makes me) violently sick :puke:
and the #1 reason: BECAUSE I BELIEVED THAT HE WAS A MAN OF CONVICTIONS AND WOULD RESTORE DIGNITY, INTEGRITY AND A REGARD FOR BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS.
He is disappointing me in several areas ... but on the flip side ... he is exceeding my expectations in other areas.
But goddamn it ... to continue the policies of the war criminals Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice. Absolutely f**king disgusting.
Having just recently learned that the CIA trained Iran's former secret police force (SAVAK) on how to torture women (mind you, I'm well aware of the US government's, acting through the CIA, efforts to institute and sustain Shah Pahlavi's rule over Iran, in no small part by training SAVAK) but to train them to torture women. There is just something (I can't put my finger on exactly what it is) fundamentally, horribly immoral about this.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY???
Long overdue for Jesus Christ to come down here and do some very serious ass-whipping.

That's where they get their material from, especially when they trash Dems like Kerry and Obama.

160. He reminded me that I am not crazy. I did hear what I heard. |
|
I was longing to have a constitutional professor in the White House who said he would restore habeas corpus, close Guantanamo and end "extraordinary rendition," and candidate Obama had indeed said he would do those things.
Sometimes the way people shout down my statements of disappointment with what President Obama has done, I begin to think-- Gee, did I really hear him say those things? -- Folks are shouting that I shouldn't have expected him to be a fierce advocate for restoring the rule of law and getting rid of the worst abuses of the Bush Gang, but he DID say those things. I wasn't wrong to long for him to follow through with those pledges.
And like I've said before, the fact that he was practical or pragmatic didn't worry me because moving fast on millions of green energy and infrastructure jobs, national health security and restoring habeas corpus are very practical things that would strengthen our country.
We had our Democratic majorities and a mandate to lead. The GOP was at 29% popularity. The people's bailout of Medicare for All could have logically followed Bush's crash and bailout to Big Finance. But we did some peculiar bipartisan dance, instead of saying that we would like to be bipartisan but the modern Republicans had strayed so far from their party's ideals like fiscal restraint and a strong defense that we just could not do that right now.
A practical president could have said he would like to endorse more offshore drilling but the clean up technology lagged so far behind the drilling technology that he would not do it without a commitment from big oil to devote 15% of their profits to clean up technology R&D and a fund to more rapidly compensate victims of their many spills.
He could have said he would like to endorse expanding nuclear power but the waste issue had yet to be tackled, and therefore, it would be better to put the funding into aggressively expanding solar, wind and conservation technologies right now.

Promises must be kept and I know fundamental change is hard given the tentacles of RWs in all institutions but it's time for Oman to deliver on promises.

It is really sad for me that the 21st Century Green FDR dream I had for President Obama and the Democratic majority would have been very practical and pragmatic for the majority of us.

ads for Pat Toomey on this page?!!! He is at least as bad as Rick Santorum was, quite possibly even worse. Does D-U have no control over this sort of thing? I am absolutely appalled.

that the politics of the situation are going to have a devastating effect on anything progressive. Already the talking heads are accusing liberals of not holding Obama accountable, comments I get at work like, Where are the war protestors? Where is the ACLU, when Obama extended the patriot act? What about DADT and equal Marriage? Where is Hollywood holding Obama accountable.
The illusion it creates is that progressives are unprincipled.
