Speaking of license plates...
My sister works for the DMV and tells this rather humorous story:

Emida, Idaho, isn't even a wide spot in the road. The population there is somewhere around 30, and the "entering Emida" and "leaving Emida" signs are only 200 feet apart. Since it's in Idaho you can well expect there are a couple of teabaggers living in the vicinity, and one of them decided to declare Emida a sovereign nation. Probably something about taxes. Anyway, he decided everything within a one-mile radius of the only commercial building in Emida (it's a bar) was within the boundaries of the "People's Republic of Emida."

It gets better: This fucking guy went to St. Maries, bought a sheet of quarter-inch plywood, and made license plates! People's Republic of Emida license plates, and he passed them out free of charge to everyone in town! Naturally, no one except the teabagger decided to...well, you know, actually install them on a motor vehicle, but this fucking guy did. Naturally, the sheriff informed him that if he drove a vehicle with People's Republic of Emida license plates outside the boundaries of the People's Republic of Emida the sovereignty of the PRE was going to be violated because the sheriff was going to throw his ass in jail and leave it there.

The dipshit then proceeded to drive a motor vehicle bearing his homemade license plates back to St. Maries, where the sheriff was as good as his word.

Idaho small-town politics is just so much fun...

1. Thanks for the smile.
Regardless of its people, Idaho sure is beautiful country.

3. "People's Republic"-isn't that a "Communist" term?
These idiots are clueless about the terms they bandy about.

and I bet the judge wanted money in U.S. dollars too.

8. I would certainly hope so
Oh god...google IH 633, the Idaho Silver Gem Act. Written by my very own state representative Phil Hart (who, unfortunately, is going to be reelected because no one is going to run against him), it quotes Article I, Section 10 (powers prohibited to the states) of the US Constitution, specifically the line "states will not accept anything but gold or silver coin in payment of debts," to authorize the minting of a one-ounce coin, made from Idaho-sourced .9994 sterling silver, which will be legal tender, at the current price of silver, for payment of taxes and fees to the state and payment of debts incurred by the state to vendors who request payment in that form. I think this is a wonderful bill--silver is at record highs and investors who buy silver coin like the US Silver Eagle will love it--with one very slight flaw: Article I, Section 10 also says "states will not coin money." Just because it's unconstitutional as fuck to call these things money doesn't mean they shouldn't do it--I'd buy a bunch of them. They just can't make them legal tender for the payment of anything.

4. Doesn't sound like a teabagger to me
Given the "People's Republic" stuff. More of an overenthusiastic joker.

6. I know Emida well and I believe this story.
I've eaten at the restaurant (beer and wine only) many times. In fact I personally know the owners and I also know the sheriff. I haven't lived in the area for 3 years but I visit once in a while. I can't wait to tell them 'guess what I heard' and meet the guy who cooked this up. Living this rural in Idaho is something I never want to do again, EVER!
