Faux & American Thinker/Ed LASKY recycling old items about Univision voter registration drive
As much as I yak about "keeping your enemies closer" (LIMBOsevic, O'LOOFAH), I can't even scratch the surface: I had never heard of Ed LASKY/American Thinker, or how MALKIN, Faux, and LIMBOsevic apparently are devoted to him.

This evening on Faux News Watch, one topic was whether it is O.K. for Univision to be conducting a voter registration drive among Hispanics with the expectation that a vast majority of that group will be (or SHOULD BE, I say) Democratic in their voting. The Rethugs on the panel thought it was outrageous (Cal THOMAS and PINKERTON). Neil ____ said that so long as a drive does not specify a particular candidate, policy, or party it's all right.

PINKERTON said that if a Xtian outfit, Xtian Broadcasting, would do this there would be an outcry from Libs. The moderator, Ed BURNS, said that the (owner?) of Univision is a hugh!!1 donor to the Dem party and pal of the CLINTONs. Later, in Googling on "Univision voter registration," there popped up Ed LASKY and American Thinker, with BURNS's comments having come verbatim from the LASKY item.

But the first item, below, is from 2004, such that this is not a NEW deal, with the regularity of it more than likely already having been established.

Univision’s Voter Drive Registers 15,000 Voters in NY & NJ

New York, NY -- A voter registration drive sponsored by the premier Spanish-language media company, Univision, and its New York’s TV and Radio stations, along with the Hispanic Federation and El Diario-La Prensa newspaper, registered an unprecedented 15,000 New York and New Jersey new voters in time for the 2004 election on November 2. It is a record number of new voters registered. ....

Univision, Voter Registration and the Clinton Connection
By Ed Lasky

The 2008 election may see a vast number of new Hispanic voters streaming to the polls and voting Democrat, thanks to behind the scenes maneuvers by the Democrats' biggest sugar daddy of all. The outlines of the plan became clear yesterday when putting together stories in 2 of America's leading business publications.

The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page story on May10th regarding Univision's campaign to spur millions of Hispanic residents to become U.S. citizens. Univision is, by far, the largest Spanish-language broadcasting network in America. The Journal article pointed out the momentous electoral consequences of this development: since Hispanics tend to vote Democratic an increasingly large number of them with a right to vote will favor the Democratic party in 2008. This is particularly so since so many Spanish-speaking residents are concentrated in states rich in electoral votes. This unprecedented effort on the part of Univision could very likely swing the Presidential election to the Democratic Party.

What the Journal missed in its otherwise fine coverage is that a major investor in Univision is Haim Saban, a billionaire who is the largest single donor to the Democratic Party. At one time, Terry McAuliffe, head of the Democratic National Committee said that "Haim Saban saved the Democratic Party." Among his donations: $7 million for the construction of a new Democratic National Committee headquarters building in Washington, D.C., complete with advanced electronic media capabilities.

More significantly, he is an extremely close friend of the Clintons. ... ....

1. Religious organizations are non-profit - Are limited in their political activities
Univision is not. And I sure as hell wouldn't count on everyone that they registered to vote would vote Democrat. I wouldn't count on everyone they registered being eligible to be registered to vote.

The wingnuts were drawing a parallel to a BROADCASTING OUTLET that is religious (and wingnut) in focus, but NOT non-profit. & Univision is running a CITIZENSHIP drive among green carders. Upon achieving CITIZENSHIP they *would* be "eligible to be registered to vote. Agree that not everybody registering is certain to vote Democratic.

But as for religious outfits being limited in their political activities, well on my local radio talk station, which has an all wingnut line-up, they constantly run ads sponsored by a church that attacks Libs. I tried calling the IRS to find out about filing a complaint, but it was a MAZE of calls talking to people who passed the buck and ending with somebody who said that they are not in the business of curtailing free speech. I think that so long as they don't endorse a particular candidate or party by name they can't be pinned down, but its obvious who they are pulling for.

Univision Gives Citizenship Drive An Unusual Lift

By Miriam Jordan
Word Count: 1,876 | Companies Featured in This Article: Univision
Backed by the largest Spanish-language broadcast network in the U.S., a massive campaign by Latino media and grass-roots groups to spur millions of eligible Hispanic residents to become U.S. citizens is showing results that could influence the agenda and outcome of the 2008 election.

More than eight million green-card holders -- that is, legal permanent residents -- are eligible to become U.S. citizens, and the majority are immigrants of Latin American origin, according to U.S. government data. Now, Univision Communications Inc. is using its considerable clout with the Spanish-speaking community in the U.S. to turn this latent voting bloc into ...
