Gingrich lauds Falwell at Liberty graduation
Ex-speaker condemns ‘growing culture of radical secularism’

http://www.msnbc.msn.com:80/id/18759973/

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told Liberty University’s graduating class Saturday to honor the spirit of school founder Jerry Falwell by confronting “the growing culture of radical secularism” with Christian ideals.

<snip>

Despite the somber tone of the day, graduates who covered the football field chanted “Jerry! Jerry!” in tribute to Falwell.

<snip>

Falwell intended Liberty to be his most enduring legacy. He envisioned it as a “Protestant Notre Dame,” projecting fundamentalist Christianity for generations. It was to be a training ground for conservative politicians, lawyers and judges — warriors in what Falwell perceived as a cultural war against liberals, gay rights, legalized abortion and forces he saw as a threat to Christianity.

Gingrich said after his speech that Falwell’s death would not slow the Christian right’s efforts.
“Anybody on the left who hopes that when people like Reverend Falwell disappear that the opportunity to convert all of America has gone with them fundamentally misunderstands why institutions like this were created,” Gingrich said.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It makes me sick to my stomach that 17 people would sit still for this crap, let alone 17,000. Chanting "Jerry! Jerry!?" That's just creepy. As I said, I'm an optimist. I have to believe American religious radicalism will eventually burn itself out. In the meantime, I'll do what I can to spread a different message. One of peace, compassion and social justice.

2. Wish I could be as hopeful as you
Why don't these idiots understand that the Constitution is for everybody, Christian or not, fundamentalist or not, and that keeping the church and state off each other's backs is the only thing that makes them both free?

:shrug:

:cry:

3. Last night at our giant secular humanism rally...
...we plotted to continue the War on Christmas (which ALL of us call the War on Xmas), how to get Easter off the calendar and the replacement of every hotel room's Gideon bible with Sam Harris' "Letter to a Christian Nation."

And, naturally, we've set some bongs to go off today.

(Yes, you read that right.)

7. Funny thing about the War on Xmas
Last time there was a genuine War on Xmas in America, it was at the urging of the Christians:

"For preventing disorders, arising in several places within this jurisdiction by reason of some still observing such festivals as were superstitiously kept in other communities, to the great dishonor of God and offense of others: it is therefore ordered by this court and the authority thereof that whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like, either by forbearing of labor, feasting, or any other way, upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so offending shall pay for every such offence five shilling as a fine to the county."

From the records of the General Court,
Massachusetts Bay Colony

5. these nutjobs have great scriptwriter, you gotta hand them that.
Radical secularists? Code word for anyone who is not a fundie, and therefore, they are evil.

If we liberals are the creative ones, why can't we come up with discrete, amusing, and semi-accurate descriptions of them?

I do not believe we can blame genetics for adultery, homosexuality, dishonesty and other character flaws.

Oh look! "Adultery"! Did he change his mind for repeat offender Gingrich?

http://pewforum.org/news/display.php?NewsID=13035
"I have been very impressed with the spiritual maturity of this man and am convinced that he has been honest and forthright in clarifying his past failings and his quest, as a Christian, for God's forgiveness,"
said Falwell, Liberty's chancellor, in a March 9 e-mail to supporters.

Yeah, such repetition really speaks volumes. Or maybe it means Newt just can't handle what it takes to be a moral person in this life? If morality is this easy to bend, how can we all sign up? And if we all signed up time and time again, wouldn't that render the very concepts moot after a while?

Still, such "forgiveness" only shows the veracity of their beliefs. Or lack thereof in their actions? Would other people be forgiven so readily? And after multiple offenses?

Practice what you preach, Newt. (uh, you're too late.)
