Two photos of troops in Iraq

Sat May 26, 4:21 AM ET

A soldier from Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry
Regiment walks past burning reeds razed to prevent insurgents
from seeking cover in Quarghuli village near Youssifiyah, 12 miles
(20 kilometers) south of Baghdad, Iraq, Saturday, May 26, 2007,
two weeks after a May 12 ambush left four U.S. soldiers and an
Iraqi soldier dead and three missing. Their comrade, Pfc. Joseph
Anzack, 20, from Torrance, Calif. was found floating in the
Euphrates river on Wednesday. (AP Photo/ Maya Alleruzzo)

Michael Kamber for The New York Times
More than 150,000 troops are now deployed in Iraq, close to the highest level at any stage since the 2003 invasion.

(A picture is worth a thousand words: Hearts and minds!)

5. Agree 100%. I meant the war criminals running the show, not the soldiers
caught in the war machine.

2. Technical correction: Reeds don't provide cover.
They may offer concealment but they don't stop bullets. So much for the intrepid reporter who hangs out at the bar. :eyes:

7. I look at those heavily armed US soldiers and
wonder how US citizens would respond if we were shocked and awed and then occupied by another country with hundreds of thousands of our citizens killed or severely wounded. I would imagine, we'd fight back, too.
