CARACAS, Venezuela - A prison riot between rival gangs left nine inmates dead and 20 injured, Venezuelan media said Saturday.

The fighting began Friday morning when gunfire broke out in the San Fernando de Apure lockup in central Venezuela, according to the Caracas-based El Nacional newspaper.

The uprising was controlled with the help of more than 100 national guard and police agents, it said.

Like in many other countries in the region, violence is common in Venezuela's overcrowded and understaffed prisons.

Of the country's nearly 20,000 inmates, about 500 were killed and more than 1,000 wounded last year in riots and other violence, according to the Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons watchdog group.

Police have quelled a riot at Honduras' main prison in which at least 18 inmates died, a Security Ministry spokesman said on Saturday. The riot at the National Penitentiary north of the capital began late on Friday and was the second such incident in the country's overcrowded prison system in a week.

"The inmates were killed with knives and machetes ... . They were all covered in blood and there are several beheaded bodies," spokesman Hector Ivan Mejia told Reuters. Last Saturday nine prisoners were killed in a riot at another prison in the northern city of San Pedro Sula. The Central American country's 25 prisons are overflowing with some 12,000 inmates. Fights are frequent as members of street gangs, known as maras, vie for control inside the penitentiaries. The streets of Honduras' main cities are blighted by maras, who often are involved in drug and weapons trafficking.

Fresh Honduran jail riot kills 18

At least 18 prisoners have been killed during a fight at a jail in Honduras, officials say.

Police were called in to help restore order after prisoners attacked another group of inmates at the main jail in the capital, Tegucigalpa.

It is the second such clash in Honduras in recent days. Last week nine inmates died during rioting at a prison in the northern city of San Pedro Sula.

The violence is blamed on overcrowding and gang rivalry within prisons.

In the latest incident, 31 prisoners were attacked by other inmates with knives and guns hours after they were transferred from San Pedro Sula prison, officials say.

Limited resources

The BBC's Warren Bull says the latest violence appears to be the result of a botched effort to protect inmates by moving them away from San Pedro Sula.
