Brewer gets NRA endorsement for Ariz. governor
Candidate Buz Mills owns a shooting range and is on the National Rifle Association's board of directors, but it's incumbent Gov. Jan Brewer who has the group's endorsement in the contested Republican primary for Arizona governor.

The NRA's endorsement, announced at a Wednesday news conference, follows Brewer's signing of several gun-rights measures since she became governor in January 2009.

One bill signed by Brewer in April will make Arizona the third state allowing people to carry a concealed weapon without requiring a permit. One she signed last year allows a person with a permit to take a gun into a restaurant or bar serving alcohol as long as the establishment doesn't prohibit it and the person isn't drinking alcohol.

Brewer got an A+ rating from the NRA for her stands and record on gun issues, while Mills received an A rating, the highest rate possible for a non-incumbent, said Sandy Froman, a Tucson attorney who is a former NRA president and a current board member.

2. Wait until AZ comes up with a law restricting gun ownership among immigrants
The NRA will have to decide if it really believes what it preaches about the right to keep and bear arms.

Or if it's more important to keep its racist base happy.

3. The NRA also endorses Democrats ...
Bill Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, has a high rating from the NRA.

Richardson touts his NRA credentials
By James F. Smith October 23, 2007 03:29 PM

LAS VEGAS -- Lauding the National Rifle Association is not usually an applause line for a Democratic presidential candidate, but New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson -- knowing his audience -- was cheered when he brought the issue up in gun-friendly Nevada.

``I'm the only Democratic candidate who's been given an `A' rating by the NRA, Richardson told officers of a pipefitters and plumbers union here. ``I'm a sportsman, like you,'' he added.

Gov. Bill Richardson Signs New Conceal Carry Law But Orders Additional Safeguards
Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Governor Bill Richardson today signed SB 40, a bill sponsored by Sen. George Munoz (D-Gallup) that removes the ban on concealed carry licensees from bringing their weapons into New Mexico restaurants with beer and wine licenses. However, Governor Richardson said he is ordering additional safeguards to address public safety concerns surrounding the bill.

“My decision to sign this bill came after much contemplation and thought. I heard strong opinions from both those for and against the bill,” Governor Richardson said in a written statement. “As the Governor of a western state, I know well the deep feelings that come with such a measure, but I also understand those feelings and beliefs must be tempered by the enactment of certain safeguards.”

***snip***

Under current New Mexico statute and regulation, there is no clear and explicit prohibition on the consumption of alcohol while carrying a concealed weapon. Governor Richardson announced that he is directing the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to revise its regulations to make it clear that consumption of alcohol while carrying a concealed weapon is prohibited. He's also encouraging the legislature to consider legislation that would make such a prohibition unequivocal in state statue.
