Trump administration cancels $766 million Moderna contract to fight pandemic flu

(AP) The Trump administration has canceled $766 million awarded to drugmaker Moderna Inc. to develop a vaccine against potential pandemic influenza viruses, including the H5N1 bird flu. The company said it was notified Wednesday that the Health and Human Services Department had withdrawn funds awarded in July 2024 and in January to pay for development and purchase of its investigational vaccine. The funds were awarded through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, or BARDA, a program that focuses on medical treatments for potential pandemics.

US court blocks Trump's 'Liberation Day' tariffs

(Reuters) A U.S. federal court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs from going into effect, ruling that the president overstepped his authority by imposing across-the-board duties on imports from nations that sell more to the United States than they buy. The Manhattan-based Court of International Trade said the U.S. Constitution gives the U.S. Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other countries that are not trumped by the president's emergency powers to safeguard the U.S. economy.

Judge slams 'perverse reading' of Constitution by Trump admin fighting lawsuit challenging DOGE

(Law & Crime) A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has rejected an attempt from Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to have a lawsuit against them thrown out — ruling they “unsuccessfully” tried to “minimize” the tech billionaire’s role — while also handing a victory to President Donald Trump, granting his request to be dropped from the case. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled Tuesday that a multistate lawsuit against the president’s ally may continue, although President Donald Trump himself will no longer be a defendant.

It's not just Elon Musk. Other Trump tech allies are turning on his 'big, beautiful bill.'

(Yahoo Finance) Elon Musk has announced his opposition to a second major plank of Donald Trump's agenda (after previously turning on the president's tariff plans) when he said in a new interview he was "disappointed" by the price tag of Trump's "big, beautiful bill." The bill "increases the budget deficit ... and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing," the world's richest man said in a CBS interview that is scheduled to air in full this weekend. And Musk is not the only one in the world of tech who has questions.

FEMA pulls its strategic plan, signaling upcoming changes to policy and procedure

(Scripps) Multiple outlets report the Federal Emergency Management Agency has rescinded its strategic plan, a multi-year document that sets policy and priorities for the department as it responds to natural disasters and other emergencies. In a memo to agency staff, Administrator David Richardson said the canceled plan "contains goals and objectives that bear no connection to FEMA accomplishing its mission." The change comes just days before June 1st, the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season.

'They Got Railroaded!' Trump Says He'll Consider Pardons for Men Convicted In Plot to Kidnap Democratic Governor

(Mediaite) President Donald Trump said he will consider pardoning the men convicted in connection with a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D). Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday, the president said he plans to look at the cases of the four men who were either convicted or pleaded guilty on various federal charges stemming from the 2020 plot to kidnap the governor. Trump, when asked about potential pardons by a pool reporter, stated he believes the men were “railroaded.”

Trump's Fury at Harvard Gets More Deranged--and Exposes a Big MAGA Scam

(New Republic) If Trump really wants to facilitate the upward mobility of America’s working-class youth, here’s a better way to do it: Persuade his fellow Republicans in the House to drop their new budget’s changes to financial aid for higher education, which will restrict access to it for large numbers of working-class students, probably including many who want to attend—yup—trade schools.

A Missouri Town Was Solidly Behind Trump. Then Carol Was Detained.

(NY Times) In the 20 years since she arrived from Hong Kong, she had built a life and family in Kennett, working two waitressing jobs and cleaning houses on the side. She began every morning at the bustling diner, serving pecan waffles, hugging customers and reading leftover newspapers to improve her English. “Everyone knows Carol,” said Lisa Dry, a Kennett city councilwoman. That all ended on April 30, when federal immigration officials summoned Carol, 45, whose legal name is Ming Li Hui, to their office in St. Louis, a three-hour drive from Kennett.

Ron Johnson suggests he might not run for reelection

(The Hill) Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Wednesday suggested that he might not run for reelection in 2028, possibly resulting in a race for an open Senate seat in a notable battleground state in a few years. In the 2022 midterms, Johnson narrowly won over his Democratic opponent Mandela Barnes. Johnson’s race had been seen as a chance for Democrats to take down a sitting Senate Republican in a state that former President Biden had narrowly clinched two years prior.
