Kemp defeats Perdue in Georgia, a major blow to Trump

Source: The Hill

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) was projected to win his renomination for a second term on Tuesday, overcoming a primary challenge from former Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) and, by extension, former President Trump. ABC and NBC News both called the race for Kemp around 8:30 p.m. ET.

Kemp, a onetime ally of the former president, stirred Trump’s ire following the 2020 presidential election after he rebuffed his pleas to overturn President Biden’s electoral victory in Georgia. Trump vowed to campaign against Kemp, eventually persuading Perdue to enter the race for governor in hopes of ousting him.

But despite carrying Trump’s endorsement, Perdue struggled to gain traction among Georgia Republican voters. Polling in the run-up to the primary showed Kemp leading Perdue by double-digit margins.
Kemp’s victory on Tuesday dealt only the latest blow to Trump’s endorsing power, undermining the former president’s argument that he has the ability to pick winners and losers in GOP primaries, even in his post-presidency.

Live Updates: 'We Have to Act,' President Biden Says After 19 Killed at Texas Elementary School

Source: New York Times

Biden demanded action on Tuesday night in the wake of a school shooting that killed 18 young children and a teacher. But it’s unclear whether this will be another speech from another president that will be followed by little real action. Mr. Biden did not call for a specific vote or a specific policy, choosing instead to focus on the emotional moment for the country.

In his speech, President Biden asked the question that many people in the country are asking tonight: Why here? He said that other countries around the world do not have the same problem with mass shootings. “Why? Why are we willing to live with this carnage? Why do we keep letting this happen?” It’s a question he didn’t have an answer to.

New York City to bid on 2024 Democratic National Convention

Politico

NEW YORK — Eight years after New York City’s failed attempt to host the Democratic National Convention, Mayor Eric Adams is giving it another shot.

The Democratic mayor is entering a national contest with his counterparts from Chicago, Atlanta and other cities to host the presidential nominating convention in 2024, according to a person familiar with the bid and a document reviewed by POLITICO.

The mayor’s team is finalizing its application ahead of a May 27 submission deadline and the winner is expected to be announced later this year. New York was among the cities urged to bid on hosting the high-profile event, added the person, who was granted anonymity to speak freely about a not-yet-public matter.

Leading the effort within City Hall are Chief of Staff Frank Carone and Deputy Mayor for Economic & Workforce Development Maria Torres-Springer.

King for a day...

I live in the new New York 10th Congressional District, which will have a wide open Primary in August. Despite Congressman Mondaire popping down from White Plains to run, this is a no-incumbent race and everybody and his brother/sister/non-binary sibling is thinking of getting in:

Current candidates are:
Mondaire Jones (D)* - Old CD-17 Incumbent - (Campaign Site)
Bill de Blasio (D) - Ex-NYC Mayor, Ex-NYC Public Advocate & Ex-NYC Councilman
Patrick Dooley (D) - Construction Executive & Navy Veteran
Maud Maron (D) - Attorney & Ex-Community School Board President
Yuh-Line Niou (D) - State Assemblywoman & Ex-Legislative Aide
Carlina Rivera (D) - NYC Councilwoman & Ex-NYC Council Aide
Brian Robinson (D) - Credit Counselor & Author
Ashmi Sheth (D) - Bank Regulation Associate
Bob Wyman (D) - Software Engineer, Geothermal HVAC Contractor & '20 Candidates

and I'm hearing about others thinking about it, including former Congresswoman Liz Holtzman.

This is a safe D district and any candidate will be a reliable Democratic vote on reproductive rights, election protection, immigration, social issues, etc. And Brownstone Brooklyn will be a juicy target for candidates looking for funding. So I and some political friends have decided organize a neighborhood review of the field to make it clear that we'll be looking for candidates who also will be knowledgeable about community issues such as transportation, affordable housing and climate change, as well as creative thinking on how to make the House work more forcefully on the issues we care about. And we'll be organizing candidate forums so the folks who only think of us as a cash register will need to meet with the local voters. Should be fun.

Today's math problem...

If an Italo (private) high speed train leaves Bologna for Rome at 6:57 AM, and a Trenitalia (public) high speed train leaves Bologna for Rome at 7:02 AM and both travel at 155 mph, why can’t we have train service like this?

National Dems are calling in a new communications expert: Eric Adams

Politico

But the city’s 110th mayor, who took office in January, is assuming a more influential role in the national Democratic Party as a leader whose motto is “get stuff done” while communicating those accomplishments to voters. Case in point: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), the head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, just had Adams speak at the DCCC’s Chairman’s Issues Conference and Weekend in the city on Saturday.

“Mayors don’t have the luxury of talking about problems — they have to go fix them,” Maloney said in a statement to POLITICO. “Eric Adams is a guy who has taken action while a lot of politicians are still talking. He brings a valuable perspective to our party and shows how Democrats can tackle all the important challenges and issues without falling victim to the false choices.”

Last weekend’s DCCC conference was “very much about helping the Democrats get control of their messaging challenges,” according to one person who attended the event. That they would turn to Adams — a moderate Democrat and retired NYPD captain who was a registered Republican from 1995 through 2002 — to do that says as much about the party’s direction as any of the competitive primaries playing out this year.

Adams told the audience of 200, composed of DCCC supporters from across the country, that Democrats “must be better storytellers,” according to a copy of the remarks obtained by POLITICO. His role at the conference has not previously been reported.

Mystery issue experienced on NASA's Voyager 1 probe from 1977

Source: CNN

The Voyager 1 probe is still exploring interstellar space 45 years after launching, but it has encountered an issue that mystifies the spacecraft's team on Earth.

Voyager 1 continues to operate well, despite its advanced age and 14.5 billion-mile distance (23.3 billion kilometers) from Earth. And it can receive and execute commands sent from NASA, as well as gather and send back science data.

But the readouts from the attitude articulation and control system, which control the spacecraft's orientation in space, don't match up with what Voyager is actually doing. The attitude articulation and control system, or AACS, ensures that the probe's high-gain antenna remains pointed at Earth so Voyager can send data back to NASA.

…snip…

So far, the Voyager team believes the AACS is still working, but the instrument's data readouts seem random or impossible. The system issue hasn't triggered anything to put the spacecraft into "safe mode" so far. That's when only essential operations occur so engineers can diagnose an issue that would put the spacecraft at risk.

New York AG opens investigation on social media companies after Buffalo shooting

Source: Axios

New York Attorney General Letitia James is launching an investigation into social media companies in connection with the Buffalo mass shooting, her office announced Wednesday.

Why it matters: The investigation will look into social media companies and other online resources that the alleged shooter might have used to discuss — and amplify — his intentions to carry out the attack that killed 10 and wounded three, according to James' statement.

The details: The investigations will focus on platforms — such as Twitch, 4chan, 8chan and Discord — that may have been used to stream, promote or plan the attack.

What they are saying: “The terror attack in Buffalo has once again revealed the depths and danger of the online forums that spread and promote hate,” James said in a statement.
