Town hall meetings scheduled for proposed Interborough Express that would connect Brooklyn, Queens
NEW YORK (WABC) -- City and state officials are looking for public feedback on the proposed Interborough Express (IBX), which would connect Brooklyn and Queens to 17 subway lines and the LIRR.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Monday the MTA will hold its first in-person town hall meetings on the IBX. Three virtual town hall meetings were previously held.
The light rail transit project would use the existing Bay Ridge Branch, which is a freight rail line that runs through Brooklyn and Queens. The line connects several neighborhoods including Sunset Park, Kensington, Flatbush, Bushwick and more. The project will also include new connections between neighborhoods that currently lack efficient pathways and additional connections to Manhattan.
"The Interborough Express is going to be a gamechanger for New York City, and as we move forward with this project, I want the entire community to be involved," Governor Hochul said. "I encourage everyone to attend one of these sessions to learn more about the IBX and share their feedback."

Nevada man charged for making antisemitic threats to Jewish US senator

A Las Vegas man who allegedly left antisemitic voicemail threats to kill one of Nevada’s US senators now faces a federal charge.
Police arrested 43-year-old John Anthony Miller of Las Vegas on Thursday, and he made his first court appearance Friday. Miller is charged with one count of threatening a federal official.
While the complaint does not name the US senator, the office of Jacky Rosen confirmed that she was the recipient of the threats. The Nevada Democrat’s website notes she is the third Jewish woman to sit in the Senate and describes her as an “outspoken supporter of Israel.”
“Threats against public officials should be taken seriously. Senator Rosen trusts the U.S. Attorney’s office and federal law enforcement to handle this matter,” a spokesperson for the senator’s office said in a statement.

Elon Musk’s grandiose plans for X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, have expanded into the dating realm, according to a report from Business Insider.
The website cited two sources who were present during an all-hands video call on the one-year anniversary of Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform for $44 billion.
The call’s reported purpose was to review all of the changes Musk has made to the platform over the past year and to ramp up excitement for 2024.
“Musk did not get into details of how exactly X would become a dating app, if there was any user demand for such features, or what further product changes would be made to turn it into one, one of the people present said. However, the idea is in line with Musk’s push for features that require payment, as most dating apps today are some form of subscription service,” Business Insider reported.

X, the company formerly known as Twitter, handed out stock grants to employees on Monday that showed it was worth about $19 billion, down about 55 percent from the $44 billion that Elon Musk paid to buy the firm a year ago, according to internal documents seen by The New York Times.
Mr. Musk paid $54.20 a share to buy Twitter just over a year ago. The tech billionaire has since said he overpaid for the social network. In March, he wrote in an email to workers that he believed the company was worth $20 billion, calling it “an inverse start-up.”
In the paperwork for the new stock grants, X said the equity would be offered at $45 a share in the form of restricted stock units, which employees can earn over time. Employees will still be paid in cash in the amount of $54.20 for any outstanding shares that were granted to them under previous management, the company said.

Migrants ousted from city shelters due to new time limits are being offered free tickets out of NYC or being sent to so-called “waiting rooms” at local shelters with no assurance they’ll get a new bed, the latest signs the crisis is crashing the city’s social safety net system.
A newly established “reticketing office” in Manhattan’s East Village is among the latest frontiers in the crisis, where migrants who spoke with the Daily News on Monday said they went after being told that’s where they could reapply for new city shelter beds. Their visits came after the expirations of their 30- and 60-day allowances to stay in a city shelter — a policy enacted by Mayor Adams as a result of a lack of space.
But once they arrived at the office, which is operating out of an old Catholic school on E. Seventh St., they were told the only option available there was accepting free tickets to any city in the country, Java Juarez, a 47-year-old Nicaraguan migrant, told The News.

Earl Blumenauer Will Not Run for Reelection

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, whose 3rd Congressional District runs from Portland east to Hood River, told WW this afternoon he will retire after next year rather than seek a 15th term in Washington, D.C.
“I’m not certain that two more years in Congress in this climate is the best way to deal with things I care about,” Blumenauer says.
In a wide-ranging 45-minute interview at WW’s offices Monday afternoon, Blumenauer was by turns pensive, combative and emotional as he reflected on a decision he’s been weighing for months. He says he will announce the decision more widely this evening.
First elected to the Oregon House in 1972, Blumenauer, 75, has served in public office his entire adult life. After stints in Salem, on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners and on the Portland City Council, he won election to Congress in 1996. Serving an overwhelmingly Democratic district, he’s never faced serious competition since then.

Dozens of key Democrats are launching a write-in campaign for President Biden in New Hampshire’s primary election next year after the president declined to add his name to the ballot — the latest in a standoff between the Granite State’s election officials and the Democratic National Committee.

The group includes more than 100 prominent New Hampshire Democratic and independent figures, including state lawmakers and former party leaders.
Earlier this year, the DNC approved a plan to reshuffle the order in which states would appear in its 2024 primary calendar, moving South Carolina to the first spot, followed by New Hampshire and Nevada a week later, then Michigan. Proponents of the plan — including Biden himself — argued that South Carolina was much more diverse than Iowa and New Hampshire, which traditionally have held the first-in-the-nation caucus and primary election, respectively.

Alabama man indicted on threats against Fulton DA, sheriff over Trump case

- A 59-year-old Alabama man has been indicted on federal charges of transmitting interstate threats to injure Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat. Prosecutors say those threats were made over the probe into former President Donald Trump and others’ attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
Arthur Ray Hanson, II, made his first appearance in federal court in Huntsville, Alabama on Oct. 25. He will be formally arraigned on Nov. 13 in Atlanta.
"Sending interstate threats to physically harm prosecutors and law enforcement officers is a vile act intended to interfere with the administration of justice and intimidate individuals who accept a solemn duty to protect and safeguard the rights of citizens," said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan. "When someone threatens to harm public servants for doing their jobs to enforce our criminal laws, it potentially weakens the very foundation of our society. Our office will labor tirelessly with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to help ensure that law enforcement officials are free to serve our communities without the threat of physical attack."
The indictment outlines how Hanson called the Fulton County Government customer services line twice and left two voicemails on Aug. 6. The first call was directed to Sheriff Labat and the second for DA Willis, according to U.S. Attorney Buchanan. In both calls, the indictment state Hanson threatened violence on the public officials.

Israel has provided limited details about the invasion, four days into what an Israeli official described as an “extended ground operation.” But imagery verified by The Times indicates large groups of tanks and other armored vehicles making their way deep into Gaza, as Israel’s military has continued to strike nearby buildings from the air.
In northwest Gaza, a satellite image taken on Monday morning by Planet Labs shows large groups of armored vehicles advancing about three miles south of the northern border near the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Groups of vehicles can be seen amassed in open spaces of the densely populated area of Al Karama, north of Gaza City, less than two miles north of the crowded Shati refugee camp. Many nearby buildings appear to have been heavily damaged or completely destroyed by airstrikes.
Photographs also show a second group of armored vehicles near the city of Beit Hanoun, on the northeast edge of the Gaza Strip. Beit Hanoun had already been significantly damaged by airstrikes in the past several weeks.
Farther south, a video taken by Palestinian media worker Youssef Al Saifi on Monday morning, and verified by The Times, showed an Israeli armored vehicle firing on and destroying a car along Salah al-Din, Gaza’s main north-south road. The car was carrying a family, Mr. Al Saifi said. Satellite imagery from around the same time showed groups of Israeli armored vehicles positioned near the road.
