Computer nerd question: The healthcare exchanges on Oct. 1st, how prone to crashes ?

My prediction is that on October 1st, the exchanges will crash and malfunction a lot, unless the respective IT departments have done their homework. Even then, my impression is only a very large IT corporation like Google could withstand that first day load.

Before I get jumped on, I do NOT want the exchanges to freeze, hang, or crash. I WANT them to work correctly 100% of the time.

Anyone ? I know this is not an easy question.

Britain’s harsh crackdown on Internet porn prompts free-speech debate

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/britains-harsh-crackdown-on-internet-porn-prompts-free-speech-debate/2013/09/28/d1f5caf8-2781-11e3-9372-92606241ae9c_story.html

LONDON — In a land whose uptight reputation is belied by its wicked ways, the Conservative-led British government is in the midst of a crusade to enact some of the strictest curbs on pornography in the Western world.

The campaign follows the rape and slayings of two young girls by men seemingly addicted to online pornography. One of the children, 5-year-old April Jones, was buried Thursday after a nationally televised funeral.

Just as in the United States, child pornography is already illegal here. But citing widely accessible brands of legal pornography for “corrupting childhood” and “normalizing sexual violence against women,” Prime Minister David Cameron has launched an all-out assault that opponents say is pitting state-sponsored morality against Internet freedom in one of the planet’s most open societies.

Family-friendly filters will soon be automatically installed when most new subscribers sign up for Internet service, with customers wishing to view pornography needing to make a conscious choice to turn them off. Before the end of next year, most of the 21 million wired households in Britain will also be placed in the awkward position of having to declare whether they want to keep access to legal online pornography or have it blocked by their telecommunications providers.

Ikea furniture/housewares

Tonight my son and I went to the Walmart-like enormous two story Ikea store near me. We didn't buy anything but I had some Swedish meatballs in their enclosed cafeteria. My son knows that I'm not crazy about shopping, and offered to come back to buy some things we need for our kitchen and maybe some furniture.

I know absolutely nothing about IKEA. I've seen it in malls for years. The kitchen stuff we looked at seemed reasonably priced and quality. Is the furniture durable and of decent quality for the money ? Thanks in advance.

Students' rights to digital privacy versus "in loco parentis"/parents' interests

My 17 year old son told me the following story, not vouching for the 100% accuracy thereof:

He has a 15 year old female friend who attends another high school nearby. Supposedly....she sent a Android app message (starts with a K...I'll go look it up) to a fellow student. Again, supposedly....she volunteered to go buy LSD for this fellow student. Her high school supposedly provides free wifi with no agreements that must be signed informing the kids upfront that their digital privacy may be invaded at any time.

Soon, she was summoned down to the main disciplinary office of the high school. Again, supposedly, the high school has installed a system on their wifi that scans for keywords like LSD. Her mother was called to the high school and now she is in deep doodoo but no legal trouble.

Again, without talking to this 15 year old, I do not know how accurate all this is. I've never even been to the high school in question, which is near Daytona Beach, FL.

Assuming the story is basically correct....school in the clear or school in hot water ? I explained to my son the whole in loco parentis" doctrine. Apparently according to that Wiki link, it has been not upheld on numerous occasions.

What say you ?

eta: My son was outraged that, supposedly, the school had done this with his friend. I told my son I completely understood his outrage but, because of my limited knowledge of in loco parentis, that I could see the school district winning in court. Now that I've read a bit more on ILP, I could be wrong. To be clear, I sure don't want my son selling LSD, so I tend to side with the school district if this account is basically correct.

eta2: I think this was the app: Klyph for Facebook

question on necro-posting in the Lounge

I answered an old thread in the Lounge, from July 2013 aka necro-posting. Below you see my post:

Now you see the screenshot of the Lounge from just a few minutes ago:

You will notice that even after a few minutes, the OP from July 2013 is NOT showing up at all. Is this a bug ? A feature ? My computer caught in another dimension ? Thank you kindly.

eta: To be helpful, here's a screenshot of the entire thread:

This photo is inspirational to me, makes me think

This little Austrian boy was so happy to get new shoes during World War 2. It inspires me to be happy with the very small things in life. The photo almost made me tear up.

The Outer Limits TV series, the 1960's one...love it, hate it, meh ?

I remember it scaring me silly when I was 5 and crying. I still don't like horror type stuff to this day. Too empathetic/sensitive/scaredy-cat lol
