demmiblue's JournalTrump used her slain daughter to rail against illegal immigration. She chose a different path.
Laura Calderwood, whose daughter, Mollie Tibbetts, 20, was allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant and left to rot in a cornfield this past summer, closed the mailbox, walked up the steps to her house and turned on the stove. It was getting on toward 6, and she needed to get dinner going. The boys would be hungry.
There were two inside the house now. One was her son, Mollies younger brother, a high school senior named Scott. And the other was his friend, a courteous teenager named Ulises Felix. He was the child of Mexican immigrants. For years, his parents had lived and worked beside the man accused of killing her daughter at the same dairy farm on the other side of town, which they fled after his arrest, leaving behind not only Brooklyn, where theyd been for nearly a decade, but also Ulises, their 17-year-old son. Hed wanted to finish high school in the only town hed ever known, and soon, remarkably, he had a new home the home of Mollie Tibbetts where Laura had promised to look after him in his parents absence.
She flipped on the television.

House Democrats scooping up staff, lawyers to power Trump investigations
Source: CNN
(CNN)The House Judiciary Committee is looking for a few good lawyers.
A recent committee job posting reviewed by CNN asked for legislative counsels with a variety of expertise: "criminal law, immigration law, constitutional law, intellectual property law, commercial and administrative law (including antitrust and bankruptcy), or oversight work."
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee needs lawyers, too, posting jobs for "executive branch investigative counsel."
The advertisements give a window into the Democratic recruiting that's ramped up ahead of the party gaining subpoena power for the first time in eight years when it takes over the House in January.

Cell signal puts Cohen outside Prague around time of purported Russian meeting
Source: McClatchy
WASHINGTON- A mobile phone traced to President Donald Trumps former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen briefly sent signals ricocheting off cell towers in the Prague area in late summer 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign, leaving an electronic record to support claims that Cohen met secretly there with Russian officials, four people with knowledge of the matter say.
During the same period of late August or early September, electronic eavesdropping by an Eastern European intelligence agency picked up a conversation among Russians, one of whom remarked that Cohen was in Prague, two people familiar with the incident said.
The phone and surveillance data, which have not previously been disclosed, lend new credence to a key part of a former British spys dossier of Kremlin intelligence describing purported coordination between Trumps campaign and Russias election meddling operation.
The dossier, which Trump has dismissed as a pile of garbage, said Cohen and one or more Kremlin officials huddled in or around the Czech capital to plot ways to limit discovery of the close liaison between the Trump campaign and Russia.

Gladys West, a Pioneer of GPS Technology, Receives One of the Air Force's Highest Honors
Decades after she helped develop Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, 87-year-old Gladys West has received one of the Air Force space program's highest distinctions, First Coast News reports.
West was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. earlier this month. The honor was given in recognition of the work she did as one of the agency's "human computers" in the era predating high-powered data processors. When West joined the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Virginia in 1956, she was one of just four black employees, two of whom were men. One of those men, Ira West, would later become her husband.
Early in her career, West contributed to an astronomical study that proved the regularity of Pluto's rotation relative to Neptune. From the mid-1970s through the 1980s, she programmed a computer to come up with a super-accurate model of the Earth, accounting for variations in the planet's shape caused by gravitational, tidal, and other forces. This model laid the groundwork for the Global Positioning System (GPS) that's ubiquitous in the military, smartphones, and cars today.
West retired from the military in 1998, but she hasn't stopped her pursuit of knowledge. In 2018, she completed her Ph.D. through a remote program with Virginia Tech.

CNN: Trump signing MAGA hats for troops may have violated Pentagon rules
CNNs Pentagon correspondent said that President Trump signing red Make America Great Again hats for troops in Iraq may have violated Defense Department rules.
"What commander allowed that to really happen? Barbara Starr asked Wednesday night.
This is very much against military policy and regulation, Starr said. Troops are not supposed to be involved in political activities, the U.S. military is not a political force.
The president and first lady Melania Trump made unannounced visits to Iraq and Germany on Wednesday to visit the troops. Video footage showed Trump signing the red baseball caps that were a symbol of his presidential campaign.
