demmiblue's JournalSearch begins for Ernest Shackleton's lost shipwreck
The 'Endurance' under full sail during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, led by Ernest Shackleton
A South African icebreaker departed this morning in search of Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance, which sank off the coast of Antarctica in 1915 after being slowly crushed by pack ice.
"The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust is pleased to confirm that the Endurance 22 Expedition, which is aiming to locate, survey and film the wreck of Endurance,... has departed on schedule from Cape Town, headed for the Weddell Sea in Antarctica," the expedition's organisers announced.
As part of the renowned Irish-born polar explorer's Imperial Trans-Antarctic expedition between 1914 and 1917, Endurance was meant to make the first land crossing of Antarctica, but it fell victim to the merciless Weddell Sea.
Just east of the Larsen ice shelves on the Antarctic peninsula, it became ensnared in sea-ice for over 10 months before being crushed and sinking some 3,000 metres below the surface.

AP investigation: Women's prison fostered culture of abuse
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) Inside one of the only federal womens prisons in the United States, inmates say they have been subjected to rampant sexual abuse by correctional officers and even the warden, and were often threatened or punished when they tried to speak up.
Prisoners and workers at the federal correctional institution in Dublin, California, even have a name for it: The rape club.
An Associated Press investigation has found a permissive and toxic culture at the Bay Area lockup, enabling years of sexual misconduct by predatory employees and cover-ups that have largely kept the abuse out of the public eye.
The AP obtained internal federal Bureau of Prisons documents, statements and recordings from inmates, interviewed current and former prison employees and inmates and reviewed thousands of pages of court records from criminal and civil cases involving Dublin prison staff.

Rep. Berman wants to add vaccination status to Michigan civil rights law
State Rep. Ryan Berman (R-Commerce Twp.) is seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is running for reelection this November. On Tuesday, he introduced House Bill 5710, which adds medical condition and vaccination status to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) as just the latest move by Republican lawmakers who have opposed the COVID-19 vaccine and mandates. Berman did not return a request for comment.
Passed in 1976, the statute currently prohibits discrimination in Michigan based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, or marital status in employment, housing, education, and access to public accommodations.
There have been bipartisan attempts in recent years to add sexual orientation and gender identity to ELCRA, but they have failed to gain traction in the GOP-controlled Legislature. A constitutional amendment failed to get on the 2022 ballot.

Exclusive: Newly obtained records show Trump and Jim Jordan spoke at length on morning of January 6
Source: CNN
(CNN)The House select committee investigating the Capitol insurrection is now in possession of White House records that provide new details about a phone call Donald Trump made to Republican Rep. Jim Jordan on January 6, 2021 -- as the investigation drills down on the former President's communications that day and questions have long swirled around calls between him and lawmakers.
Two sources who have reviewed the call records tell CNN that Trump spoke on the phone at the White House residence with Jordan for 10 minutes on the morning of January 6. That afternoon, Jordan took to the House floor to object to the certification of President Joe Biden's Electoral College win, and pro-Trump supporters attacked the US Capitol.
A key focus of the committee's investigation has been on the runup to the insurrection and the myriad ways Trump and his allies, including those in Congress, tried to overturn the election results. The new details about the morning phone call come as the committee is debating whether to move forward with a subpoena for Jordan after he refused to voluntarily appear for an interview.
Since Jordan acknowledged last summer that he spoke to Trump on the phone that day, the Ohio Republican and Trump loyalist has waived off questions about it or been inconsistent in his answers.

Uyghur athlete delivers Olympic flame in opening ceremony after global criticism of China
China kicked off the 2022 Winter Olympics on Friday with a pared-back but visually stunning opening ceremony and a defiant message to the world leaders boycotting it.
After a brisk, snowflake-themed show that emphasized youth and ordinary people, the Games were declared officially open by Chinese President Xi Jinping, prompting a burst of fireworks over the Birds Nest National Stadium in central Beijing.
The final step was to deliver the ceremonial flame, a moment that often carries symbolic weight based in part on who is selected for the task.
Chinese officials chose two athletes, one of whom was Dinigeer Yilamujiang, a Uyghur cross-country skiier from the western Chinese region of Xinjiang.

Norway bans breeding of English bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles spaniels
In a ruling this week, Animal Protection Norway said the breeding of the dogs went against the countrys Animal Welfare Act, citing the inherent health problems the dogs face.
Evidence has shown that both breeds experience severe breathing conditions, eye problems, skin infections, heart problems, as well as joint problems.
A study by the University of California found that the English bulldog does not have the genetic diversity continue as a breed.
