Edit: For those who aren't watching the trial, the defense tried to insinuate that her viral video changed her (as in, oooh, you received some internet fame). The prosecution asked how the event affected her life in redirect. This was her answer.

White House announces measures to address anti-Asian violence

Source: The Hill

The White House on Tuesday announced additional funding and the establishment of new initiatives in the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Human Services to combat the rise in violence and discrimination against Asian-Americans.

The Biden administration rolled out a series of efforts, including a cross-agency initiative at DOJ to respond to anti-Asian violence.

As part of the initiative, the Civil Rights Division re-convened its Hate Crimes Enforcement and Prevention Initiative with a focus on the sharp increase in hate crimes against Asian-Americans. The FBI will publish a new interactive page that highlights hate crimes against the community, and the bureau will begin holding training events to educate agents on recognizing and reporting anti-Asian bias.

The White House will re-establish and expand its Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, with initial focus on anti-Asian bias and violence and meet in the coming weeks with leaders in the AAPI community, according to a fact sheet distributed by the administration.

Biden Makes 1st Judicial Nominations, Including A Supreme Court Contender

Source: NPR

President Biden announced his first judicial nominations Tuesday, including Ketanji Brown Jackson for the U.S. Court of Appeals seat vacated by Merrick Garland when he became U.S. attorney general. Jackson is considered a potential Supreme Court contender.

In a statement, the White House said Biden would nominate 10 "individuals to serve as Federal Circuit and District Court judges, and one individual to serve as a Superior Court Judge for the District of Columbia."

"These nominees consist of attorneys who have excelled in the legal field in a wide range of positions, including as renowned jurists, public defenders, prosecutors, in the private sector, in the military, and as public servants at all levels of government," the statement said.

The list is a diverse one: It includes three African American women tapped for Circuit Court vacancies and candidates who would be the first Muslim American federal judge in U.S. history, the first AAPI woman to ever serve on the U.S. District Court for the District of D.C., and the first woman of color to ever serve as a federal judge for the District of Maryland.
