Source: The Hill

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) received a standing ovation at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night.

Waters appeared onstage at the awards show with actress Tracee Ellis Ross to present the award for "Best Fight Against the System” to the cast of "Hidden Figures."

The audience showered her with applause when she came out, and Ross thanked her for "your voice and how you use it."

“I will take this moment to go off-script and say Congresswoman Maxine Waters thank you for your work,” Ross told the cheering crowd.

Syrian refugee family names newborn Calgary baby 'Justin Trudeau'

Source: Calgary Herald

When 22-year-old Afraa Bilal gave birth to her son in Calgary Thursday evening, she and her husband Muhammad had no disputes over his name. The little boy would be known to the world as Justin Trudeau Adam Bilal. Justin Trudeau is the boy’s first name, a decision Afraa said her and Muhammad made as a token of gratitude for what Canada’s prime minister has done for refugees fleeing Syria.

“We like to name him Justin Trudeau because I think it will be a small thank you for the prime minister,” she said. “We love this man, we appreciate him so much. He helped so many of us, he’s a really nice man.”

The couple fled their family home in Damascus last year as the war in Syria worsened. Hoping to provide safety and a new life for their two other children — a four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son — the family was admitted into Canada in February 2016. Despite having to leave their parents and other family behind, a year later the Bilals are celebrating a welcome joy to their lives, baby Justin Trudeau.

“Our family stayed in Syria. We always worry about them, we don’t know what will happen in the future,” she said. “We miss them, but we are so lucky to be in Canada.”

This father and son will completely change the way you sing your ABCs

This father and son will completely change the way you sing your ABCs
We thought we knew our ABCs, but a video of a father-son duo performing the schoolhouse classic has us wanting to relearn.

Your classic ABCs just got a major remix from the father-son duo stealing all our hearts and trust us, the ‘A’ is for adorable.

Stanley Freeland, father of four-year-old Josiah, has been recording a series of precious videos in which he and his son don matching outfits and dance to a selection of hip hop tracks. The one the world’s currently obsessed with? A very charming Josiah performing a hip hop version of the ABCs. Yep. It’s as amazing as it sounds.

Dressed in matching grey polos, red shorts and bright white sneakers, the father and son deliver the alphabet like you’ve never heard it before. With Josiah taking centre stage and his father performing hype man duties, the two dance and groove all the way from A-Z.

Fact Check: Is Congress Exempt From the G.O.P. Health Bill?

Source: NYT

WASHINGTON — Accusations of hypocrisy greeted the House passage of the amended American Health Care Act on Thursday, as people were outraged — erroneously — by claims that the bill does not apply to Congress.

It is true that the bill exempted lawmakers from its provisions. But a subsequent piece of legislation, which the House approved, eliminated the exemption, effectively nullifying that claim. The Senate now will consider both bills.

Timothy S. Jost, a health care expert at Washington and Lee University School of Law, said the exemption “was done for arcane budget reasons and many did not realize it.” He was one of the first people to notice the quirk.

...

But in the end, none of that came to pass. A separate bill offered by Representative Martha E. McSally, Republican of Arizona, eliminated the congressional exemption from the House health plan. Her bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House — meaning that Congress will live by the same health care rules as other Americans.

Justin Trudeau wore super geeky 'Star Wars' socks to meet the Irish Prime Minister

Source: Mashable

Everyone broke out their best Star Wars gear in celebration of May the Fourth (aka Star Wars Day) and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was no exception.

To celebrate the day, Trudeau rocked some super geeky Star Wars socks while meeting with Ireland's Prime Minister, Enda Kenny.

The chill AF world leader appropriately chose one R2-D2 sock and one C-3PO sock (they're a team after all) for the occasion and documented his very nerdy sartorial choices on his Instagram story.

And because Trudeau knows what the internet wants, he later posted a closeup of the socks on Twitter, and wished everyone a happy May the Fourth:

Want!

Stained glass artist and jeweler Neile Cooper had a vision for a sanctuary: a small cabin behind her home in Mohawk, New Jersey that would feature her glass designs on every available surface. The result is Glass Cabin, a structure built almost entirely from repurposed window frames and lumber that features dozens of panels of her stained glass work, depicting flowers, birds, butterflies, mushrooms and other scenes from nature. Cooper explores many of these same motifs in her popular jewelry designs. You can see more photos of Glass Cabin on Instagram. (via This Isn’t Happiness)

A moment of Zen to battle Trump fatigue (space related... and full screen is a must!):

vimeo.com/211656397

Just as the bright city lights are vanishing behind us, the Milky way starts to become clearly visible up ahead. Its now us, pacing at almost the speed of sound along the invisible highway and the pitch-black night sky above this surreal landscape. Ahead of us are another eight hours flight time, but we already stopped counting the shooting stars. And we got already to a few hundred.

I have posted this one before:

Obama's presidential library is sounding more and more impressive as I read about it!

Source: NYT

...

“The main thing that Michelle and I contributed was just saying, ‘What is it that we want to see 10 years from now?’” he said, recounting his conversations with the architects who designed the center. “And we don’t want to see some big building that’s dead, and kids are getting dragged to it for a field trip. What we wanted was something that was alive, and that was a hub for the community and for the city and for the country.”

...

The Obama center could be one of the biggest projects ever developed on the South Side, at a cost of at least $500 million. Expected to be completed in 2021, it will be located in Jackson Park, a space designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The 500-acre, lakefront park already includes the Museum of Science and Industry, a beach, golf courses and athletic facilities.

Mr. Obama said he wanted his library to include a children’s play area that would attract families from the neighborhood, and a community garden for schoolchildren. He said he wanted food trucks and some grills so people can barbecue, prompting chuckles from the crowd.

“Why are you laughing?” he asked. “We don’t have any folks who grill here? I thought this was the South Side of Chicago!”

Because Mrs. Obama lamented that Jackson Park did not have hills when she was a child growing up in the nearby South Shore neighborhood, Mr. Obama said the presidential center would be outfitted with a sledding hill.

Mr. Obama said he envisioned “a studio where I can invite Spike Lee and Steven Spielberg to do workshops on how to make films,” and “a recording studio where I could invite Chance or Bruce Springsteen, depending on your tastes, to talk about how you could record music that has social commentary and meaning.”

“What we want this to be is the world’s premier institution for training young people in leadership to make a difference in their countries, in their communities and in the world,” he said.

Kudos to the FLOTUS and POTUS!

I also do understand the fear of the area being gentrified. I hope efforts are made to prevent that from happening.
