DOJ officials rejected colleague's request to intervene in Georgia's election certification: Emails

Source: ABC

Top members of the Department of Justice last year rebuffed another DOJ official who asked them to urge officials in Georgia to investigate and perhaps overturn President Joe Biden's victory in the state -- long a bitter point of contention for former President Donald Trump and his team -- before the results were certified by Congress, emails reviewed by ABC News show.

The emails, dated Dec. 28, 2020, show the former acting head of DOJ's civil division, Jeffrey Clark, circulating a draft letter -- which he wanted then-acting attorney general Jeffrey Rosen and acting deputy attorney general Richard Donoghue to sign off on -- urging Georgia's governor and other top officials to convene the state legislature into a special session so lawmakers could investigate claims of voter fraud.

"The Department of Justice is investigating various irregularities in the 2020 election for President of the United States," the draft letter said. "The Department will update you as we are able on investigatory progress, but at this time we have identified significant concerns that may have impacted the outcome of the election in multiple States, including the State of Georgia."

The draft letter states: "While the Department of Justice believe[s] the Governor of Georgia should immediately call a special session to consider this important and urgent matter, if he declines to do so, we share with you our view that the Georgia General Assembly has implied authority under the Constitution of the United States to call itself into special session for [t]he limited purpose of considering issues pertaining to the appointment of Presidential Electors."

Police officer dies in shooting outside the Pentagon building, law enforcement sources say

CNN —

A police officer died Tuesday following a shooting outside the Pentagon building, according to three law enforcement sources.

While the exact circumstances of the shooting are still unclear, CNN previously reported that an officer had been shot in the incident. The Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which oversees the security of the Pentagon, did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Pentagon Force Protection Agency Chief Woodrow Kusse will brief reporters on Tuesday afternoon with Pentagon press secretary John Kirby to provide more information

The “shooting event” occurred on the bus platform on the Pentagon complex and prompted a lockdown of the building with no personnel allowed outside, according to a message that was sent to the Pentagon workforce by the Pentagon Force Protection Agency.

The lockdown has since been lifted, the agency announced later Tuesday, tweeting: “The Pentagon has lifted the lock down and has reopened. Corridor 2 and the Metro entrance remains closed. Corridor 3 is open for pedestrian traffic.”

Senate passes bill to award congressional gold medal to Capitol Police

Source: The Hill

The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to award congressional gold medals to law enforcement agencies that responded to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

The Senate unanimously approved the legislation, which previously passed the House in March.

The bill provides a congressional gold medal to the U.S. Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of the District Columbia and a third medal to be displayed at the Smithsonian in honor of other law enforcement officials that responded to the crisis.

The architect of the Capitol would also be given a medal to be displayed in the building.

Paris World Fair 1900. The fair was open for 7 months and more then 48 million people visited.

The Exposition Universelle of 1900, better known in English as the 1900 Paris Exposition, was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 14 April to 12 November 1900, to celebrate the achievements of the past century and to accelerate development into the next. The fair, visited by nearly 50 million, displayed many technological innovations, including the Grande Roue de Paris Ferris wheel, the moving sidewalk, diesel engines, talking films, escalators, and the telegraphone (the first magnetic audio recorder). It also brought international attention to the Art Nouveau style. Additionally, it showcased France as a major colonial power through numerous pavilions built on the hill of the Trocadero Palace. Major structures remaining from the Exposition include the Grand Palais, the Petit Palais, the Pont Alexandre III, the Gare d'Orsay railroad station (now the Musée d'Orsay) and two original entrances of Paris Métro stations by Hector Guimard.

I learned how to be a nurse behind a respirator and a yellow gown, amidst the constant beeping...

https://twitter.com/kathryniveyy/status/1421815468436992003

I became an ICU nurse at the end of July in 2020, during one of the first peaks of covid when it was all still so new. I learned how to be a nurse behind a respirator and a yellow gown, amidst the constant beeping and hissing of ventilators that couldn't support failing lungs.

Because I was so new, I had no baseline for what normal nursing looked like; I just had a vague sense that it couldn't look like this. The unit was bleak and everything we did felt futile, and I realized at some point I felt more like a ferryman to death than anything else.

Some people lived, if they never got to the point they needed Bipap. Most didn't. By the time they came to us they were too sick, their lungs too shredded, kidneys already failing and blood already clotting and so often beyond the power we had to heal.

I would watch, feeling helpless, as they would go from a nasal cannula to a Vapotherm to a Bipap, and then when their chests started heaving and they started sweating I knew with heavy dread that soon they would be intubated.

There are places we can't call you back from.

I got used to the death. I walled it off, pushed it down, and did my job. I advocated for death with dignity, with as much kindness and comfort as we can muster, and accepted very early on that we can't save everyone.

And then numbers started going down.

We went from 3 covid ICUs to 2, then 1. I started to see what it was like to be a nurse in pre-covid time and realized how many people normally survive. The things I did mattered, my actions actually saved lives - no longer was death my constant, silent companion.

The more time I spent out of the covid unit, the more I realized exactly how bad it was; all the vents, the CRRT, the relentless march towards death that we could hold off for a time but never stop. Walking through the much smaller covid unit was like walking through a graveyard.

It is so much worse, this time. We all have so much less to give. We are still bearing the fresh and heavy grief of the last year and trying to find somewhere to put all this anger.

But the patients don't stop coming. And the anger doesn't stop coming.

Underneath that anger, I feel defeated. Nothing we do makes a difference. The world spins on, oblivious and belligerent, as we fight to save the tidal wave coming our way. With less staff, less resources, and a lot less of ourselves to give.

I don't know what to say that will make people listen. I wish I could snap so many people out of their selfish stupor but I can't, so I get to watch instead as people learn the hard way; with a tube down your throat. With a "code blue, code blue!" and the crack of a sternum.

With a three am phone call to your family, held by hands still trembling from the rounds of CPR, voice shaking, knowing that I am about to shatter someone's world.

You learn the hard way and I see it through. I carry the weight of your choices and the pain they cause.

It didn't have to be like this.
