Republican lawmaker vows to run over protesters who block highways

Source: Think Progress

In the wake of heated protests in St. Louis following the acquittal of the cop who killed Anthony Lamar Smith, a self-described Christian lawmaker from Pennsylvania endorsed running over protesters who block roads.

While sharing a news story about the St. Louis protests, Pennsylvania Rep. Aaron Bernstine (R) tweeted that “[i)f anyone EVER tries to stop my car on a highway with negative intentions… I will not stop under any conditions.”

In subsequent tweets, Bernstine called protesters “thugs” and “snowflakes” and vowed he “won’t be assaulted in the name of ‘free speech.'”

Bernstine dismissed replies pointing out that the tactic he is endorsing was recently used by an alleged neo-Nazi to murder a woman during a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in addition to militant groups like ISIS.

But two screen shots sent to The Sun show posts on Hamill’s personal Facebook page making anti-Semitic remarks.

One screen shot is of an April 2013 post, in which Hamill writes: “Who knew that reading jewish jokes before I go to bed would not only make me feel better about myself but also help me to sleep better as well. Here is one for everybody, “What’s the difference between boy scouts and jews?” Anybody know? Well it is because “Boy scouts come back from their camps.”

One person replied to that Facebook post, calling it “messed up.” Hamill replied, “u don’t like it? don’t read it then.”

In another screen shot from a 2011 post, Hamill writes: “so I find it funny that people will talk about how our government needs to do something about our economy and in reality it’s YOU who needs to stop taking advantage of our system and get a life and do something with your life. Gotta love reality when it hits you in the face. Stupid people annoy me. Put them in an oven and deal with them the Hitler way. Haha.”

Taxpayers billed $1,092 for an official's two-night stay at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club

Source: The Washington Post

The bedroom suites at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club, available only to members and their guests, feature hand-painted Moorish ceilings, antique Spanish-tiled mosaics and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean.

On a weekend in early March, during one of seven trips by Trump and his White House entourage to the posh Palm Beach property since the inauguration, the government paid the Trump-owned club to reserve at least one bedroom for two nights.

The charge, according to a newly disclosed receipt reviewed by The Washington Post, was $1,092.

The amount was based on a per-night price of $546, which, according to the bill, was Mar-a-Lago’s “rack rate,” the hotel industry term for a standard, non-discounted price.

Christians in U.S. Military Serve Satan If They Tolerate Other Religions, Air Force Chaplain Says

Source: Newsweek

A U.S. Air Force chaplain who ministers to thousands of men and women at an Ohio base is asserting that Christians in the U.S. Armed Forces “serve Satan” and are “grossly in error” if they support service members' right to practice other faiths.

In an article posted on BarbWire.com three days ago, Captain Sonny Hernandez, an Air Force Reserve chaplain for the 445th Airlift Wing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, criticized Christian service members who rely on the Constitution “and not Christ.”

He wrote: “Counterfeit Christians in the Armed forces will appeal to the Constitution, and not Christ, and they have no local church home—which means they have no accountability for their souls (Heb. 13:17). This is why so many professing Christian service members will say: 'We ‘support everyone’s right’ to practice their faith regardless if they worship a god different from ours because the Constitution protects this right.”

Hernandez continued: “Christian service members who openly profess and support the rights of Muslims, Buddhists, and all other anti-Christian worldviews to practice their religions—because the language in the Constitution permits—are grossly in error, and deceived.”

Judge Temporarily Reinstates Youngstown State Player Convicted in Steubenville Rape Case

Source: Sports Illustrated

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — A judge has decided a man convicted of rape as a teen in a highly publicized Ohio case will be temporarily reinstated on the Youngstown State University football team after he filed suit against the school in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Benita Pearson granted Ma'lik Richmond, of Steubenville, a temporary restraining order against the university in a hearing on Thursday, allowing him to play football again for the next 14 days. She has scheduled a preliminary hearing for an injunction on Sept. 28.

Richmond filed a federal lawsuit against the university Wednesday after the school allowed him to join the football team as a walk-on and then told him he couldn't play this season. He's seeking reinstatement to the team's active roster along with attorney fees and an unspecified amount of damages.''

One of Richmond's attorneys, Susan Stone, said in the lawsuit that the university had become infected with an anti-male bias due to Richmond's rape conviction.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's 'Hamilton,' History Teaching Get Capitol Honor

Source: NBC

WASHINGTON – Playwright, actor and composer Lin-Manuel Miranda accepted an award at the Capitol Tuesday in a room with a likeness of Alexander Hamilton, whose story Miranda brought to Broadway and who's role in history he's implanted in the American conscience.

Manuel Miranda was honored with the 2017 Freedom Award from the United States Capitol Historical Society. The society said it was given to Miranda for his creation of “Hamilton,” Miranda’s broadway smash that has won 11 Tony awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The award also recognized his work with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History Hamilton Education Program. The program brings low-income high school students to the Hamilton performances for $10.

The ceremony where Miranda accepted the award was held in Statuary Hall in the Capitol, which includes a statue of Alexander, the nation’s first U.S Treasurer.

“We give him this award because of his unique ability to engage new audiences with our history and his dedication to inspiring informed civic participation,” Don Carlson, the historical society’s chair said in a statement.
